Anyone have a good lead on these cheap? I'm not seeing the deals I used to. Also, do you know if they are still good and not half dust?
thanks.

I bought a case of them from Coleman's Surplus a couple of years ago. Seems to me that I got them pretty cheap. Probably have a lifetime supply.

I've been trying to figure out if this is trioxane or something else. trioxane?? A few years ago, I bought a box of small trioxane fire starters called Wade Fire Starters. They were packaged in smaller packets than the military stuff so it would take several to heat food but I'm pretty sure it was the same stuff. I got it at Sportsmans Warehouse but now I can't find it at all. WADE FIRE STARTERS The website visible on the box is now a farm machinery site. I think there are actually quite a few trioxane products out there but they don't tell you what it is so they're very difficult to identify.

I don't use them for heating food, I like them as a no fail fire starter.

Check ebay. That is where I have purchased mine over the years. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=trioxane&_sacat=0&_from=R40Been using them for many years, work great. As long as the packaging has not been compromised or damaged, they will last a long time. I also apparently have a lifetime supply (3-4 cases) and the dates on some are from the late 80s IIRC. The newer military version is a gel and I feel it does not work as well as trioxane (but does not have the trioxane smell).

Same here. Especially for the tent stove at 3am.

If you're looking for a reliable fire starter, cotton balls (the 100% cotton ones, NOT the fire retardant ones) with vaseline rubbed in does wonders.

I once heated some ramen noodles in my canteen cup on a cold night in the field while on radio watch. Since I didn't want to get my tail in a crack for light discipline, I covered myself with a poncho while I waited for the noodles to soften. I got so sick I thought I was gonna die. Next guy on watch got a cup of hot noodles and I tried to sleep off my trioxane high. Don't know why that story just came back to me now, but I don't recommend using it for cooking under a poncho.

That would probably be equally true in a small 1 or 2 man tent. I don't know how dangerous the trioxane fumes are, but the depleted O2 can get you if nothing else.

Best fire starter I have ever used. Lights with almost nothing and burns hot and slow.
I think, therefore I am, conservative.
