No way would I trade one of my 41's for a 10mm. One of my 1911's shooting a 230 grainer to 1100/1200 fps of a 255 grain cast at 1100 fps will any thing if not more than a 10mm and will do so at less pressure.

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

I shoot the 10 with 180's in a switch barrel Para 16/40 and a 6 1/2" 38 WCF convertible Ruger Blackhawk. The 41 is a 4 5/8" Old Model Blackhawk mildly throwing 220 LFN's. Had and sold a one of the first run 610's many years ago, never warmed up to it. Pretty happy as it is though I do have another "40" in the works. grin

Got a Glock 20, like it, use it sometimes. Got several .41 mag S&W's. Like them better. They're more accurate than the Glock (although the Glock's not bad) and can put a bit more smack downrange. Also don't have to look all over or the brass at the range. I get a lot more loads out of .41 mag brass. Maybe it's just me, but I buy new 10mm brass, load it once, reload it once, then let it go..

Interesting comments;

Justin, I did say, 'most applications' - not looking at a ballistics comparison, just that a 10 can handle many chores, so there is overlap. I never was under the illusion they were equal, I know both paper ballistics.

Travis - def brass recovery is a pain w/a semi, though one could set up a sheet or barrier to allow brass to hit and fall to a localized area - not ideal or viable for all scenarios.

JWP, is that a 5" and stock gun? Or heavy springs and longer bbl? Just wondering, also are those loads published, and if you want can you say what powder you use?

Seems like a person Needs....both (41 + 10 Semi) smile

Another plus for the 41mag is the availability of Marlin carbines chambered to use them. They lift the performance of any hand gun cartridge to another level. The .41mag really can do some awesome things when it starts out the barrel at 1800fps.

I'm not aware of anyone yet who has come up with a carbine in 10mm. It would be a hoot to shoot for sure.

There just seems to be a bunch of shooting, casting, reloading (brass lasts for 20 or more loads) pleasure associated with the .41mag.

I'd like to try a 10mm. No money at the moment for new guns, dies or loading supplies.

Silly question..........

That's a trade only a dumbass would make; hell, I wouldn't even trade a decent .357 for a 10mm.

'Cause 41's & 357's are kewl & I knew you'd jump on it with both feet.

Can't say I've ever felt the need for a 10mm as I am at peace with a 45ACP.

The way these comparison threads (10MM vs. 41 Mag) usually work is ...

The no-nothing posters always recklessly jump into the thread first - trashing something superior whilst falsely elevating their own inferior preference.

This scenerio is then calmly followed by the more knowlegable and sophisicated members who then proceed to turn the tide and set the record straight - In this case rightfully restoring the preeminence of the vaunted and venerable, 41 MAGNUM.

~ I too, have no yen for a 10. smile

I would typically ban a person for such non-sense but since you agree with jwp, I cannot.

Today...

Let me introduce you to the MechTech Carbine Conversion kit, available for 10mm 1911 and Glock models.

A 5" with an eighteen and a half pound spring. I have shot them from stock Springfield 1911's and Colts. I had the lock time lengthened on mine making the ridiculkously heavy springs unnecessary

That's awesome!
I had both the 6.5" and the 5" from the original run of those 610's and foolishly sold both. I've done a lot of "caliber-consolidating" over the last few years but the 10MM is one I could see myself getting back into. It's such a versatile cartridge.
