I need a good mid layer jacket (or stand alone when not as cold) for hunting or "any" cold day wear. What do you guys think of primaloft as an insulation or is there something else you would recommend. I'm also on a tight budget right now so I have to factor that in when I go to purchase.

I have and can afford the finest down parkas and jackets made, but, I use ONLY Primaloft-original Integral Designs- and would also buy from Wild Things, Westcomb and a couple of boutique US firms-for hunting.

I have a LOT of serious cold weather experince and PL is "da bomb" for many if not most uses. I love sleeping bags made from it and have three, plus, am going to buy one of Evan's "Mountain Serapes" fairly soon.

Go for it, I bet you will be happy with it as Cabela's is a great outfit and I find their gear VERY sound.

I picked up a North Face jacket last year on clearance with Primaloft insulation. I like it as much or more than the down that I own, probably more to be honest.

I am considering the Kuiu spindrift (primaloft) and then a weatherproof outer layer. The few primaloft jackets I've seen have all been quite similar, what kind of temps are they good for if combined with an outer layer and a shirt underneath?

I like the Outdoor Research Havoc jacket Primaloft and Windstopper combined and last year they had an Olive color. I waited until March last year and bought at 50% off. OR typically has most clothes in solid earth tones and at the end of the seasons its pretty easy to find 50% off

Thanks for the info guys, next question is...I have read that Primaloft equals about 550 fill of down. But I can't find anywhere what weight of primaloft is equal to the down. I see it comes in 60g, 100g and 200g. Any ideas?

I e-mailed Kuiu a couple months ago about when they might have some Spindrift's in stock, they replied that they were discontinuing the Spindrift and coming out with a new insulating coat in November.

They didn't say if it's going to be Primaloft or not.

Be curious to the "packablity" as compared to down.

I got one of these from my wife last year, very versatile, pretty easy on/off of the sleeves. I have hunted, hiked, and climbed in it and it is still going strong.

Turned out pretty nice IMO. Last night I stuffed the whole jacket (size large) into a size XS 2L sea to summit dry sack. Not enough room to roll the top and buckle, but the whole jacket did fit, Very packable IMO.

A contract-overun APCU jacket/parka from fleabay is, far and away, the most bang for the buck. My MED weighs 25oz. and appears to be "montana" warm/thick. For true dry cold conditions I plan to layer underneath it with a lightweight hooded down jacket.
