In the catskills(NY) it was the 336 or 94 with a few semiautos thrown in, not sure today? Here in eastern NC when we moved here it was a BAR 270, 30-06.
Today Ill Quote part of ringworm's post. "Now you see lotsa short mags. No skill required. just aim for brown as far out as the food plot reaches. Then back 900cc 4-wheeler from the double trailer so you dont have to get the F-350's tires dirty."

Ingwe, I really don't think that's a 7x57. Looks like a 270 to me

The Remington Model 8A in 30, 32, or 35 Rem were real popular for both deer and gangsters years ago. Then Remington introducted the Model 81 in 300 Savage and it was very popular as a deer rifle. Classic Browning looks that many used to cherish.

There are so many classic deer rifles it might be easier to post photos of NONclassic deer rifles. But here are three of mine 93 Marlin 38-55 Winchester 1885 38-72 .54 Carolina Flinter

Those ARE classics, esp with the receiver sight. Very nice! The most classic of all time...the Win. M64 " Deer Hunter's special"

From northern Wis roots, hafta be any old turdy odd sex, maybe a Rem 721/700 or 760. But for an all-round classic, vote (and tote) the Savage 99 300SAV.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

My classic, if for nothing other than sentimental reasons. I've owned this rifle practically my entire life, and it has been responsible for filling at least one tag a year.

The M64 is one of, if not the, most aesthetically pleasing rifles made.
The M71 is a purty one, too.

I can't say there really is a "classic" deer rifle for this area. Everybody I grew up watching had something different. Bolt actions of all types, Winchester and Remingtons the most common. Lever guns with 94's and 336's being seen often enough. Dad had a 1954 Marlin 336 that killed it's share of deer. It is surprising that I've run into half a dozen or more older folks that say they used to hunt with a Savage 99 though.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

What a great, great thread...... when our deer season opens here in Minnesota on Saturday morning, I will head for my stand situated overlooking a brushy swale with a 722 Remington in .300 Savage. Another vote for the old 300 in a Savage 99, 20 or 40, or Remington 722, 81 or 760, classics all!!

My dad grew up in SE Okla, said the Remington 742 in 30-06 was the going thing then for guys who could afford one. Everyone else had 30-30s or a 303.
For I am not ashamed

In Pennsylvania I would have to say the Remington Pumps are the classic deer rifle...there are probably enough of them in the Commonwealth to put a picket fence around the borders using nothing but Remington pumps. After that Winchester and marlin lever guns

NO ONE can deny that's a Classic. Very Nice. I had one in 7 RM, very nice. Traded it for something else and WISH I still had it. In Southern Ark, since 1986 I have seen MORE Rem 700s in 270 or 06 than ANY OTHER. I've owned 2 Savage 99s, 1- 243 & 1- 358: WISH I still owned them.

I'm surprised by the absence of sporterized Mauser & Springfields.
Savage 99's are the essence of hunting rifles. I wish I had one.
This could be categorized as regional. Back east, fat bullets were the norm. Out west, long & skinny bullets that shoot a long ways were preferred.
Hard to go wrong with a 7x57, '06, .308 Win anywhere.

How about a Marlin 336 SC, .35 Rem, Redfield Receiver Sight or a Winchester 88, .308W, Weaver Classic V 2.5-7x
