and Expense for a 7-08 AI on a SA 700?
Is the extra cartridge length going to be noticable?
Thanks

You get a little over 1/10" more length. If your rifle is throated long and it is important to you to be able to reach the lands at magazine length, you could have a Wyatt box fitted, or have your barrel set back and rechambered with a shorter throat.

I went with a Wyatt box in my Stiller Predator 'cause that's what they are machined for. Some folks speak ill of them, but once I installed my magazine spring right side up and tweaked it a little bit at the case head end of the spring, it feeds just fine.

If I were to build another 700, I would just have my chamber throated appropriately for the bullet I wanted to shoot loaded to a 2.8" OAL. That will give me a little bit of room to chase the lands.

I've a Wyatt's box in a LA Model 70 and have had zero problems with it. It allows maximum latitude in my STW and I easily do it again in this platform. I doubt I'd go to the trouble in a SA 700 running a 7-08 AI, but it wouldn't scare me if I thought the extra .110 was an advantage. If I were you I'd spend a little time loading some cartridges to a longer OAL and if the advantage seems significant then pick a smith to install a Wyatt's box and make it work. They are not a "drop in fit" but they are far from difficult.

I refuse to install any Wyatt's box. Nothing but an expensive pita for minimal gain. The 7-08AI isn't long enough that another box is necessary - since the bullet choice is where the length becomes a factor...

I have one 700 in 284 win and the wyatts box works and feeds fine. I think in the future, I will have the rifle throated for the COAL I am looking for and if its a situtation where I want to run two rqadically different bullets I will build it on an action that can handle it. (Winchester's and Rugers have slightly longer magazines) or run a long action instead.

What other options are out there for extending a short action remington? All I know of is the Alpha type II AICS type mags. Are any BDL/ADL styles available, besides the Wyatt's?

I personally believe there's a market there if someone wants to step up. It would require action mods just like the Alpha mags do, but there's no reason someone couldn't figure out an ADL or BDL style setup with a mag box and matching follower.

Redneck,

Always wondered about a M70 SA with the mag box spacer removed. Your thoughts?

Sometimes they take some tinkering. I have done a few of them, mostly in 7WSMS on short actions because of how my reamer is throated with 168s. My 243AI reamer has the same malady with 115s.
