So how does everyone clean there 99 bore and protect there muzzle from damage to the crown? I try to be careful and use a bore guide when I can find it!

Unless I see need otherwise, I use a boresnake. The sky has not fallen yet.

I clean mine by sending an 150 grain projectile through the bore...propelled by smokeless powder.

I use a high quality 1 piece rod and carefully thread it down the bore from the muzzle with a patch on a properly fitted jag.

People who lack the physical dexterity to clean a barrel in this manner shouldn't be allowed to own firearms.

I also subscribe to the theory that a little judicious cleaning is far better than scrubbing the chit out of it! Again, a matter of practical common sense.

I switched years ago. I never liked a "bore snake" because once they're dirty, they're dirty and all you occomplish is dragging dirt down the barrel.

I use this product to clean ANY gun I own. It just makes sense to me.

I put a hard rubber washer (faucet type) up against the handle.

In theory, if a guy can afford one of these rifles, and the shells for it, and the cost of going hunting with it be it near or far, then one can afford a bore guide or two. (That is of course if one lacks the manual dexterity to guide it safely in and out, like Mike said.)

I'm surprised no one mentioned the obvious solution: eschew all solid frame guns and only own takedowns. Problem solved! whistle grin

By cleaning from the muzzle to breech, you still push the fowling towards the action. Something I prefer not to do.

And to add to that, how many folks take the time to swab the chamber after it's all said and done.

A bore snake can be cleaned if it gets dirty.
One pull with a bore snake equals hundreds of patches if you talk about square inches of cleaning surface. Who of you runs hundreds of patches thru their rifle?
You can feed it from either end. It has nothing to damage the bore or crown.
I can carry it everywhere.

It won't work for the clod who pushes his barrel into the mud.

To add to that, it's kind of hard to apply solvent to a bore and let it soak a bit if you're using a bore snake. I guess if one had a bunch of bore snakes with different solvents and oils...

I made up dummy rounds for all of the calibers with a bullet seated backwards to act as a stop for the cleaning rod. That gets the throat cleaned without fouling up the chamber. I remove the dummy and pull a patch through from the breech before applying a last bit of oil and then it's all nice and clean.

A) bronze brush attached to a bent cleaning rod piece.

B).22 caliber bronze brush

I wrap a patch around bronze brush and insert into chamber to block fouling crude from moving into chamber. Then, attach patch wrapped .22 cal brush and insert into chamber/rifling to tidy things up. Clean up chamber with clean dry patch.

Are you suggesting that this scenario is a valid argument against the use of boresnakes? If so, it's not. How can Stupid be the boresnake's fault? confused

I do as Mike Said Above and also Use the Otis, For L.B.K. recommended it years Back, and works great on all my guns as well.

Let's pull the wrong size boresnake through the barrel, get it stuck, then hammer everything long and pointy that we own down there to try and dislodge it! Yeah, let's do that!! Then we can say it's the boresnakes fault cuz their really bad and stuff. laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh
