I'd been looking for a good shooter 99 at a decent price for a year or so. A buddy of mine called me and said he saw 2 in a pawn shop and they looked pretty good. I went by and looked, though I have no knowledge of 99's to speak of, thought "man what a couple of nice old 99's. Top one is 1899 "H" I believe and the bottom is a 99 "H". The 99 H is in really great shape, no extra holes, chips, and in 250-3000. Now the top one is where I messed up, the 1899. It had a crack in the forearm and a small chip out of the forearm too. I figured the checkering is aftermarket, but looks great and was done a long time ago. It's in 250-3000 also. It has the 3 matching serial numbers and was built in 1921. So I bought both at a decent price I think, less than $1000. I get home and start doing some research, bad mistake, should have done this first. The 1899 has been rebarreled, I think by Savage with the same exact barrel as the 99H. I guess that kills it for collector value. What do you guys think?

so I think the first is probably a pre-war 99E but would need more details like the serial number? The checkering is aftermarket but does look nice.
The second one is a 99EG not an H. What is the serial of this one?

Highknob,
I think you can remove the mask. You stole them. You should feel real bad.
Very nice looking EG by the looks of it.

Would be difficult for most of us here to walk away from that pair at under $1000. Can't go wrong on that deal. Welcome to the forum

Beautiful rifles. You'll enjoy them very much. Hard to start on 99's with two dandy's like that. It's like getting a 6 point bull elk your first time out. Keep your expectations in check...

First one at that serial number and it being a solid frame would make it a 99C or 99E, and the barrel doesn't look thick enough for a 99C. So 99E with checkering added.
Not a bad grab for the pair since they're in 250-3000. Is the EG d&t for scope? Looks like the bolt is jewelled.

so yeah, the top one would likely be a 99E but I am bit miffed by it having "the exact same barrel as the other" which would appear to be a late 50's EG if the jewelling is correct. The sights would be different, both front and rear, the address would be different, and the length would be different....
more info needed... serial number of the second gun... and if you remove the butt plate on the first gun, is the stock hollowed out in a big oval and not just for the stock through bolt?
oh and despite the fact that the top one is stamped 1899 on the top of the receiver, it would letter as a 99... nothing but minute detail to us collectors that are picky about that crap...the 99E was basically the second generation of the solid frame 1899H.

Calhoun-Neither one is D&T and the EG is jewelled.
lovemy99-The 1899 has been rebarreled but with the same as is on the EG. It has the later address on the barrel and not the correct one for the date and serial numbers. Also has the same sights as the EG. I think the barrel is 24". I did measure it but i've slept since then. Serial number in the 648xxx range, it dated to 1951 I think.
