How does this cartridge perform with 22" barrels compared to 24"?

Thanks

The 24" tube will be about 39.7 fps faster...

+2...........About a 20 fps per inch of shorter tube length.

That approx 40 fps velocity loss, will mean a difference between penetrating the vitals vs bouncing off the hide....LOL!!!

My experience with .30-06 case capacity cartridges in the .277" and smaller bore sizes leads me to the conclusion that the difference is closer to 40 fps per inch of tube.

QL agrees with my empirical data. They say your difference will be 75 fps between 22" and 24".

I wouldn't even consider a 6.5-284 with a sub 24" tube.

I'm torn between 24", 25" and 26" for my 6-284. Will likely go with 26" and do the experiment where I chronograph loads through the same barrel as I cut it down to 24".

Should be interesting at the range when I break out the hacksaw and lop an inch or two off my barrel!

I actually just ordered 6.5x284 today. Been toying with what length barrel for a week or so and just split the difference and went with 25". I would like to be over 2900 fps.

Gary,

I got over 2900 out of my 24" tube with RL17, HV100 and Magpro. Shooting 140/2 grainers.

I originally thought I would use mine as a mountain rifle so put on a 24" number 4 contour. Eventually rebarreled to a 9.3x62 but if I ever get another 6.5x284 ( or Gibbs) she'll be built to run and have a min. 28".

Thanks Chris, I am going to try 4350 and 4831SC first because I have some here. I will be shooting 140's hopefully between 2900 and 2950.

Love that cartridge. That being said, I wouldn't consider anything less than 24". I really like 25" in a hunting rifle so chambered, and might even go 26". For bench work, even longer.

I've had multiple 6.5-284 barrels...

Here's a sampling, all with the same reamer, and same load, H-4831-SC and 142 SMK's:

31" - 3050fps

30" - 3060fps

30" - 3090fps

18" - 2740fps
