Gonna pick up my new Remington mountain SS in 308 Win. and was wondering what grain everyone uses in there 308 ? I think I will get 180 since i usually had great results with 30 calibers and 180 grain think I'll start with Federal 180 grain Nosler partitions or accubonds

I prefer that 100% of the grain be sealed with hand rubbed oil, or a urethane or laquer varnish.

Seriously, to the OP, for your rifle, I'd recommend starting with some 150s. 308 doesn't always like to push the heavier bullets like an '06 or a 300 WM or a WSM or... For me, I like things made with Barley.

I'd start light too. Something in the 150-165 range. I can't see the gain with heavier bullets in a 308.
On the other hand, I prefer a good rye instead.

The stock answer will be whatever shoots best in your rifle.
I use 150s in my 308 without any issues.

Everyone knows the 130 gr TTSX is the best fockin' bullet for the .308 Winchester, period. If you don't agree, you are a retard. Honestly, take your pick, 125 gr NBT, 130 gr (Barnes) - 150 gr - 180 grains, they'll all do the job well. Factors to consider would be how far your shots are gonna be, recoil, how much velocity you want, and the game you'll be shooting, then just pick what works best for you and what shoots well from your rifle.

Nothing wrong with 180's - sounds like your looking for factory loads. Is this for whitetails and bears or do you travel to hunt outside of PA? Are you looking for one load for all North American game?

150s for deer, 180s for elk.

If for white tails the 165 Balistic tip works grate. As for grain corn processed in one county of Kentucky.

I always liked 180 grain Rem CoreLoks for Elk and 150 grain WW SilverTips for Deer. I also used 165 grain Sierra Game Kings on Antelope because they were amazingly accurate out of my Win 88. If you want to use a premium bullet, I'd second the Partitions -- Which, unlike the trick monolithic bullets, ALWAYS expand.

165 BT's worked perfectly on two 100 yard whitetails last year for me, pass through after mashing the lungs.
Have a box of 150 TTSX loaded up and sighted in now that it shoots just as well, gonna try them out in a few weeks.
For a sandwich though, I like a good Rye.

My deer load in my 308 is the Sierra 165 gr BTHP with Varget, accurate and death on a Whitetail Deer
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

I have a new Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather in .308 Win coming to my FFL on Monday. My dad use to run 165gr NP for everything through his, and they worked every time.
I think I'm going to see how my rifle likes the 150gr TTSX first. If it shoots it well, I probably will run them for everything and call it good.
What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

I like the 165/168's in .308. Hadn't tried anything under 150. Shot my mule deer with a .308 with 165gr Hornady SPBT this year. Entered right where it should, exited through the off shoulder with a large hole in the middle of the bone. He took about a step and a half before plowing into the ground. Generally, I like heavier bullets, but to my way of thinking, 168 in .308 is heavier.

My deer load in my 308 is the Sierra 165 gr BTHP with Varget, accurate and death on a Whitetail Deer Close but I go Hornady 165 BTSP with Varget as a standard. Last year I shot a few with 150 BT's and Varget...same result. .308's are easy to please load wise and standard bullets perform well in them.

I'd use 180s for moose and maybe less for deer or maybe not. Deer don't need expensive bullets, esp at 308 velocities.
