Anybody know precisely what version this plain Jane model 70 is? It's chambered in .243 and according to the SN was built in 1977. It has a 22" barrel. That's about all I know. Any idea of value assuming bore is good and it's mechanically ok?...thanks!

With the black fore-end tip it might be an early M70 Deluxe.. It's a 'cap-shroud' receiver - therefore post-64 to mebbe circa '72.. Definitely NOT an XTR..
Value - best guess around $500..

At times like this, I've found it's best to resort to the source... Or at least a reliable source... My 1975 Winchester catalog shows that model to be the M-70 Standard . My 1977 Gun Digest agrees... (My more complete file of old Winchester catalogs seems to MIA... )

Correct on all counts.. I know mine is a 'standard' - and the stock has no black fore-end tip.. This pics of his show a white-line at the butt and grip-cap, plus the black tip.. Only one I had like that was a 30-06 a few years ago that was a 'Deluxe' (page 2182 in 33rd Edition) and defined the stock difference.. Value, slightly higher but not by much..

I have one just like it in 25-06 I paid $240 used for it 20 some years ago. They shoot ok. the pictured one still has the irons which were pretty good irons and the rings and mounts are an added extra value of atleast 25-30 bucks . a round here on the low end about 375 to 450 on the high end depending on cond. They function fine don't worry about what the claw extractor whiners say. Magnum Man
XTR was introduced by WRA (pre-USRAC) in 1978. Your gun is the standard M70 that was produced beginning in 1972. Previous to that your configuration was the second version of the Deluxe. The 1978 XTR was identical to your gun except for a deeper, almost black, bluing and a shiny finish on the wood (and XTR stamped on the barrel).

One of the Shooters Bibles had this model on the cover as a Model 70 Deluxe. I've got one....well kinda. I ditched the wood and put it in a McMillan Winlite. It was going to get a facelift, but I [bleep] up and started shooting GMX's....
If I'm not mistaken XTRs had different hole spacing on the rear receiver bridge(rear scopemount screw holes were close together)? Whereas all other post'64 model 70s had the same screw hole spacing on the front as well as the rear of the action. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok.. My two XTRs have the same .860 spacing on the rear bridge.. All other M70s have the same spec EXCEPT for the full-length CRF magnum actions (.300 Wby, 7mm STW .416RM and the like) which have rear spacing of .330..
