Just a quick follow up. We only ended up with one cow for 6 guys. My uncle got it on the last day at 2:30pm. Dark at 4:30. Back in camp at 9:45 and worked on it till past midnight.
I only saw 2 elk the whole week. Both were in the same group of 3. I jumped them in some thick timber and the 5 point was first to run. I had plenty of time to take him but, cow tags. I assumed the other (I thought there was only one) had already run off. One more step and 30 yards ahead the other 2 took off. I guess they thought that 5 point was a liar. Anyways, I tracked the 2 for a mile and their tracks showed they weren't running. I went another tenth and heard a stick break on my right above the tracks. I thought that both had done the J hook move to watch their back trail. I kneeled down for 15~20 minutes and listened. Nothing. So I slowly moved forward on the tracks keeping my eye out for one on the right. I had gone 10 yards when the biggest bull I have personally seen (not counting zoo and elk farm bulls) stepped out broadside at 20 yards. I could only see horns and drool. I must have said "holy cr
p" 100 times that day. He was so big he made that 5x5 (confirmed by another member of my party that it ran by) look like a baby. Had him in my scope for 45 seconds and he melted into the trees. I tried to see if I could catch up to him again but no dice. That stalk alone made my week of hunting worth it.
