Is this rifle appropriate for a youth? It looks like they may be heavy for a youngster to carry. Nice looking rifle though!
What's a good price for one in .308 that's about 90%?

Tang safety or bolt safety?
They are nice little rifles and would be good for a kid, if he/she can handle the recoil of the 308 in a light rifle. The biggest negative that I see with the 77 RSI is that people tend to put too large (physically) a scope of them and ruin the balance.

It has the Tang safety, and has a leupold compact. The seller wants $650.

That sounds like a fair price. I saw that there were a couple of NIB tang safety 77 RSIs for sale in the GUN LIST, 1 in 243 and 1 in 308, that were around that price. You might want to buy a new rifle if you alread have a scope to put on it. I have a nice article on the 77 RSI from 1980/81 that I'd be happy to copy and send to you. I like the old Vari-X II 2-7x28s on mine. Not too big, not too small, just right!

I shot my first deer with a 77RSI .243 as a 110# 14yr old back in 1983 ... wow those years are burning. Anyway the gun balanced really well with a straight 4x leupy.
Damn, I have a great dad.

Check the specs on both the old Leupold 4x and 2-7x28. You'll see that they are very similar. I try to speak only to those things that I know something about and have done/owned. I've owned dozens of Leupold 2-7x scopes, but few (if any) Leupold 4x scopes (other than the Leupold Alaskan 4x 7/8" style).

My 12 year old son has been carrying one in 250-3000 since he was 10. He hasn't complained. Recoil is stiffer than a standard sized rifle and something that you might want to consider especially in a 308.
