I am considering purchasing a solvent tank for cleaning my guns. Can anybody recommend a particular brand and solvent product?

Part of this will depend on exactly what 'guns' you're going to clean. Handguns only? Rifles? Muzzleloaders?
You must obtain a tank large enough to submerge the entire metal parts. You can buy one from Brownell's (fiberglass of some sort) or you can have one made from your local metalworking shop.
I have one of the Brownell's tanks, and I also made one out of PVC pipe for longer actions. For most cleaning chores, a good toothbrush and a large coffeecan full of mineral spirits will do quite a lot.
Some smaller parts that are REALLY crusty get a boiling treatment in a certain soap to loosen up the crud.

I would like to have one that's versatile enough to handle all guns... I thought I could just rest a rifle action in the tank & let the barrel stick out. Tell me more about your homemade pvc tank, could you post a picture? thanks, rlw

I cannot imagine a maintained gun that would need a solvent tank. I think a can of brake cleaner and some eye protection is all about i ever needed. Maybe if you are trying to do some rebluing etc.

Me? Post a picture??? ROTFLMAO... I"ve yet to find the pictureeditinguploadingpostingforidiots software.. In brief: Obtain a good length of 6" PVC pipe. Obtain two 'caps' for the pipe. Glue (PVC glue) them on the ends. Take a bandsaw or similar and cut out about 1/3 of one side of the pipe, starting and ending about 2" from the caps. This should give you a mini hog-trough type of shape. Then obtain a plastic gate or ball valve with nipple, drill one cap to allow installation of the nipple. This gives you a handydandy drain valve.. Hope this helps.
