On another site, a gent has posted photos of an early 1906 in 22 short. By the photos, it has the concealed locking lugs of the early 1890 models. As there could have been an overlap in manufacturing of the first model 1890 takedown model and the introduction of the 1906, did some of the 06's share the concealed locking lugs of the 1890?

According to Winchester Slide-Action Rifles, for the first two years of production, the 1906 used the same receiver as the 1890. That would likely explain your observation, especially since it's .22 Short only. After the receiver change is when they were redesigned to take Short, Long, and Long Rifle, interchangeably.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I was surprised to see it, and could find no reference to this variation of the '06 in any of the usual references. You would think that it would be recognized by Winchester collectors as a separate variation.

Pick up a copy of Winchester Slide-Action Rifles. Link

Wow! eek The damned things are going for over a hundred dollars now. I had no idea. I think I paid like $35.00 for it when it was still in publication. I better take better care of my copy. It looks like it's following that trend in this sort of book whereby in a few years you won't be able to get one for less than $300.00.

Ain't that the truth. I find the prices that some of the books are bringing amazing. Had we but known, we could have invested in books to support our guns.

As an aside, for those of us who are approaching "that age", it is worthwhile setting those books with value aside and letting family members know of their worth. Otherwise, they might end up in the trash or in a garage sale for a couple of dollars each. In addition to my gun books, I have accumulated quite a few collectible books on machining, antique engines and other subjects. I do know of their value, but to the uninformed, they are just old books.
