I'd try running a search on the computer for "Basic Photography" or maybe searching Amazon.com for same! A subscription to a photography magazine couldn't hurt either.

Somewhere among the many unmarked boxes in my garage (awaiting shelves!), there's an excellent two-volume set of big paper-backs on photography from the ground up. I don't remember the author's name, but IIRC "Ansel Adams" is in the title. Run a search for "An Ansel Adams Guide : Basic Techniques of Photography" in the "title" block at http://www.abebooks.com/, and you'll probably find 'em used, at give-away prices. .

These books are excellent, and can be found everywhere, though they have been out of print for many years: Time-Life Photography Series Otherwise, I would recommend a trip to your local library.

All this talk about photography lately, how long has it been since any of you have taken Black & White shots and realized how good they can look? Black and white is still my favorite.

I used to be on a Ritz Camera e-mail list. Their monthly ad contained an article that addressed the basics of photography. I used to send them to my daughters, both of whom were just starting photography (as opposed to snapshots).

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/01/12/nikon.film.ap/index.html Nikon will stop making most film cameras
NEW YORK (AP) -- Nikon Corp., which helped popularize the 35mm camera five decades ago, will stop making most of its film cameras to concentrate on digital models.
The Japanese company said it wanted to focus on "business categories that continue to demonstrate the strongest growth" as film cameras sales keep shrinking.
Nikon will discontinue seven film-camera models, leaving in production only the current top-line model, the F6, and a low-end manual-focus model, the FM10.
It will also stop making most of its manual-focus lenses.

I'm upgrading to digital when I get the $. I used to shoot a lot of black and white. I got it for free. I was involved in some intelligence photography stuff in the Navy and I got the expired film. Come to think of it I learned most of my photography skills in one of their schools. I just wish I had more time and money to keep up with it.

I learned most of my photography skills in one of their schools. Would that be the Navy's "A" school in Pensacola? Ken Howell, Class 8-50 (February-August 1950 24 or 26 weeks in those days, later cut to 14, I heard) .

Cripes, maybe my Nikon F4's will be worth something someday! Have to admit I've not used them since I started digital 6 years ago but they are fine cameras. As far as books go the Kodak Guide to 35mm Photography isn't a bad place to start with basic composition, exposure and other techniques covered and there's used copies available on Amazon from $3.15

Expect the price of film and processing to skyrocket though........
