Well over the holiday we got a little time to go up to 7000' elevation and pick up some pieces of black walnut that was given to us. A nice break from work and politics.
[Linked Image]

Pretty heavy stuff and not exactly in an ideal location to load without the proper equipment. We were able to get it figured it out.

Got it back to the mill.

Decided to cut up one of the smaller logs.

A pass trough the planer.

Afterwards we had to make three of these 8x10x16 pine beams.

Thanks for looking.

tarheel74,

The logs we picked up had been cut down and laying for several years. At 7000' elevation and a typical humidity in the teens.
We can sticker stack.

Just curious, we cut some on the farm about 6 years ago and have been drying it in the barn, have not planed it yet but will try shortly

We have the benefit of very low humidity here in NM.

Thanks for response, I used some of it as
Trim in the beach house and built a beautiful wine rack with some of it, I really like an oil finish like tung oil

Gotta love good walnut!

Especially from a log that's big enough to get past the sap wood and into the heart wood around a crotch or burl.

Some of the boards that I've seen come off from close to the dog plank have almost made me cry.

I've never seen any NM Juglans nigra. Would bet that it's very close-grained.

Nice looking walnut. I am rather fond of walnut as it has helped pay off a couple of mortgages and a college education. grin

I love the smell of walnut when you cut or sand it.

Very nice. I think black walnut deserves more respect than it gets as a fine gun stock medium. A properly cut stick is hard and dense and checkers beautifully.

Some mighty fine looking wood Sir. Pretty grain.
