There's this old possum who lives under our deck. I guess he's got a hole down there somewhere.
There was a time when I'd shoot a possum on sight,..usually with a stiff loaded .357,..but I seem to have developed a tad of sympathy for the old boy.
It's totally obvious that he's dumb as a stump,...and there's no question as to his ugliness,...but he has a rough life this time of year.
He doesn't seem inclined to be a bother. He eats and leaves.
I've decided to see to it that he makes it through the winter and have been feeding him.
We've accumulated various cans of cat food that the cats turn their noses up at,...but dump them out on the deck for my possum buddy, and he eats away at it with reckless abandon.
In fact, he'll eat about anything.
Leftovers that have taken on the "not fit for human consumption" look sends him into fits.
The carcass of an old roasted chicken is Christmas morning to him.
He'll work a bowl full of salted in the shell peanuts until his jaws are numb from chewing.
The slimy remnants of a pack of bologna causes him to lapse into a possum alpha state.
Yeah,...it's silly,...but I've adopted a possum.
His wellbeing is my winter project.
I gotta do something until spring,....so I'm gonna see how fat I can make my possum.

I understand your attitude completely. I try to catch dirt daubers that get into my shop and take them outside.

Have you baited and moved the bathroom scale to the porch so as to get a starting weight?

Never had possum. I'm guessing it tastes like rat?
Good on you B. I'm abit of a softy myself when the weather turns cold. Been known to feed a few feral cats in my day.

If he's not tearing up the joint, and you enjoy it, why not? Charlie Squirrel comes to pay homage to the Nut Gods a couple times a week. I keep almonds and pistachios next to the kitchen window, and he races across the parking lot to see if the Nut God will bless him. Two days ago I lobbed a nut out that bonked him in the head. He was startled, but recovered and snagged the nut, and promptly buried it in the downstairs neighbor's flower bed. This will be the third winter we've been doing this. Boy, has he fattened up since the first year.

Don't let Bristoe fool ya...softy no...fattening that grinner up for Christmas dinner Ha! I had the same idea but didn't see the thread as quickly as you did. Seems the least I can do is add a picture of what Ol' Bristoe has in mind to feed that Canuck bride... Mmmmmmmmmm, good! John

Having a winter project is a good thing. Good for you, better for the 'possum.
Fall seven times, stand up eight.

damn man I hope she keeps you outa the kitchen
nada wrong with armadillo, unless you have your heart set on possum and the cook says "Possum it is" and then sets out an armadillo
but he do look good
I'm pretty certain when we sing our anthem and mention the land of the free, the original intent didn't mean cell phones, food stamps and birth control.

We've got a cottontail that's been living in our front yard that we've been feeding for almost three years.

My dad has a herd of 'pet' squirrels. He even has a soft spot for the coyotes. The deer piss him off but they do actual damage.
Basically he won't shoot anything that isn't raising hell.
I won't either but the yotes don't get a chance to behave.
Nice work Bristoe, keep us posted!

I have a 10y/o boy with a BB gun....'nuff said. Heck he's been killing vermin with his soft air BB gun for quite awhile now he's moved up to a proper BB gun since he's proved himself safe and responsible.
