I got the rifle , Marlin bolt action , a couple years ago as a gift and haven't worked with anything except 150 hornadys and ballistic tips but want to use it mostly for bad weather days , since its stainless , and also as a reliable spare rifle . mostly for deer but also to take along to elk camp as camp spare . gun seems to like the hornady's with RL15 and the ballistic tips with Varget but am thinking need to settle on a good 165 grn for a do it all load . Any body like a particular load and bullet as a do all for the 308 , 165 or what ever ?

I would say 168 gr Nosler ballistic tip over Imr4064 or Varget... I have seen quite a few elk taken with this combo.

This a pretty hard combo to beat for general hunting use. Somewhere in the 45gn area would be my guess.

No argument here. That's probably the bullet I would start with. I would just add w760, IMR4895, and RL15 as possible powders.

The Hornady 165 Interlock would be my choice. H-4895 as usual.

I'd probably shoot a pair: 165 SP Interlock for paper, and 165 Partition for hunting.

165 gr Nosler Partition all the way, I'd try Reloder 15, Varget, and Big Game with that bullet.

That's easy...165 Accubond backed by 45-46 of Varget.

What he said except 165 AB or NP, whichever shoots best!

I have a 700 in 308 and have tried the 165gr. Speer Deepcurl. I must have gotten lucky because I chose RL15 and W-W cases with CCI200 primers. I worked up to 44.0 grains and settled on that.
I've only shot targets at 100yds but it shoots them into extremely tight groups, sometimes 1 holers.

Most all 150/165s will be great for deer and bear.

If elk is in the mix 150/165/8TTSX or 165 NP/AB would be my choices. Once again Varget is a good place to start.

I wouldn't use the 168 TTSX out of a 308... I would use the 130ttsx (48gr TAC) or the 168 ballistic tip, also the 165 accubond.... 45-46 gr of varget

Well looks like 165/168 is the right weight but brand sure varies. I used the 165 gr Hornady SP as the only bullet in a 308 for a lot of years. As I recall I used IMR 4064, W748 and IMR 3031.

+1 a little lighter weight and good speed is the trick with TSXs.
