My second post on the forum, and a new owner of an 1899 that I've really fallen for, now I have a chance to buy a really clean 1951 Model 99 in 300 Savage. It has a period Bushnell Scope, and the stock is in excellent shape - original butt plate - except for the addition of a couple of ugly swivels - the bore is nice bluing good and it looks like it spent a lot of time in the closet. Brass Spool. The seller (a friend/dealer) is asking $450. It seems like a good deal, but I haven't been in the Model 99 market for long - I guess I'm asking for someone to tell me to buy it.... ;-) But I'm pretty new to the market, and would like the opinion of cooler and more experienced heads.... buy now...actually if its clean and like you say bore is good 450 is good .

does it have a snobel forend or rounded , is Savage mod 99 stamped on left side of front of reciever or the top under the scope base??

Sounds ok if you like it, buy it. The market is softening on shooter 99's the last couple months, but if condition is good you'll get your money back at that price, should you ever want to.

Look at it this way. You don`t buy it ,you can bet someone else will.

It has the snobel forend and checkering that looks cut, not pressed, Savage Model 99 on left as I recall, but I neglected to get the full model number - I've got a call in to my buddy to take another look at it.

Only two models made in 1951, the 99EG with a schnabel forearm and the 99R with a fat and wide forearm with rounded end. The 1950's 99R was always drilled and tapped for scope bases from the factory, the 99EG usually wasn't until 1955'ish - though there are ones that show up earlier.

It sounds like an "EG".

If it was made in 1951, the Lever Boss Code should be the inspector's number plus a "C" in the small, indistinct OVAL on the front of the lever boss (opposite of where the lever rotates in the receiver)

Buy it QUICK because that's a very good price !~!~!

Buying it tomorrow, held it in my hands again and had that thought - "If I don't get it, I'm gonna regret it." Now I have to explain to my wife why I didn't get the 10/22 Ruger for her...time to work a little more overtime! ;-) Boss code 24C. The model # is covered by the scope mount, but sounds like Ron has it nailed with the EG. Ran a couple of pads down the bore (it hadn't been cleaned by the seller) and it looks even nicer than before - still lots of closet dust on the outside, but it was put away clean, and was well cared for. All I'll need to do (for my own peace) is to take out the crappily installed sling studs and patch with some walnut plugs. I hadn't looked closely before but the scope is a 3x9 Tasco Pronghorn, so that's going - I'll probably swap the Redfield 2x7 off my 340.
Funny, I have a peaceful calm now, (probably like what a heroin addict feels after a shot ;-)) except that it's in the dealer's safe for my 10 day waiting period...Kalifornia -ugh! I'm asking for a box of .300 Savage ammo in my stocking, and I'll be in the post-Christmas crowd at the range.

If I were going to use the rifle for hunting I would leave the swivel studs. I've seen a lot worse

Actually, I've spent a lot of time there. Working on the railroad. Pattaya Beach and [bleep] mainly but also Chon Buri, Sattahip, Chiang Mai, Uta Pa and of course Soi Cowboy in Bangkok. Ya, I'll be hunting with it (maybe in Thailand, now ), but the front one is in pretty crooked and it's such a nice forestock .... just one of those things that takes away a bit. I was thinking about using a barrel band swivle mount, then saw a post from someone that said a barrel band swivel could affect accuracy, but I have a hard time believing that - I don't crank on the strap when I shoot, and won't take shots much over 150 yds. I wonder if the savage swivel barrel stud screws from the later models have the same thread as the 99....

I have the swivel stud that replaces the forearm screw if you are interested.
