I've found a dealer that has the Z6 1.7x10x42 on sale for $1263. Anyone know of a better price on this scope? Also, are there any other brands in this style and price range that would be better for deer hunting application?

Wow! - where, I'd like to get one too!
I have the Z3 and really think it is a great scope. I think you could add a ballistic turret to that in the future if you wanted as well.

Dang, must have gone fast. Ordered one earlier that is on its way, but I just checked and don't see them on their site now.

They still have the Z6 2x12x50 on sale for $1358. I've been buying these that are 4+ years old to get the (now discontinued) tds reticle model and paying $1500-$1650. Best glass my eyes have ever seen. I think I've got 5 of them now - very hard to come by.

I had a 1" Swaro with the TDS reticle. Because of the SFP, it had to be at full power to work. The top end on this scope was 18X and using a Harris Bipod, trying to kill a Pronghorn at 385 yds, holding that high powered glass still was quite a chore. I made the shot, but traded that scope for a Z5 3.5-18x44 BT, later fitted with an Outdoorsmans turret.
If one was going to use the TDS, a FFP reticle would be the way to go, as it would work at any power setting. I'm now a turret guy, but your FFP, TDS set up makes a lot of sense. I do like the TDS as it's simple, yet effective.
I don't have a Z6, but do have a Zeiss Victory 1.5-6x42 T* which should be pretty close. I got mine used in the $900 range, like new. I don't think I'd want to pay $1,600, although it's a good scope. No TDS with Zeiss, of course.

holding that high powered glass still was quite a chore. The high powered glass has nothing to do with holding still. One moves just as much with open sights as with a 18X scope. It's just the scope allows one to see the wobble.

Your are correct. But that's not sure how it felt out there, trying to kill a speed goat, all that wobble driving me nuts.
I like the option of the ranging function being independent of scope power. It just makes things a lot easier.

DF I actually prefer the second focal plane - but then again I don't have any use for the super high power models. I've got about 30 tds's now including the 5 Z6's and 25 of the AV's in 4-12x50 and 3-10x42 and a few Kahles 3-10x50's. I have no trouble with 10 or 12 power at 300+ yards, which is when I use the holdover reticles. I'm always bedded down on shots past 300 anyway. I just couldn't get used to the FFP and the huge reticle at high power. Little too busy for me. I did try the BT in the Z6 3-18x50 and the crosshair was too fine for me. A buddy just picked up the new Z3 4-12x50 BT with 4W reticle and I might give that one a try. Lots of great optics out there today - the key is to get what YOUR eyes like, not what your buddy thinks is best.

The Z3 duplex is good, the Z5 duplex is way too fine, IMHO. My Z5 3.5-18 was sent back to Swaro for a #4 German, which is much better.
