I found a smoking deal on a Rem model 700 338 win mag and it is way to much gun for my wife. She shoots a 270 with 140gr accubonds and kills everything she shoots at. So I want to rebarrel this one to something easier to shoot for her and looking for some imput from you guys.

257 Wby or 264 Win Mag

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Just did that with my .338 700 BDL.

257 Wby is another distinct possibility.

Order a PTG after market bolt with a standard bolt face and re barrel to something besides a belted mag. I detest muzzle breaks, but it is still an option if you so wish. 7mm mags have a very sharp recoil, and I would "assume" the 264 and 257 would be also, 338 is more of a push, but that is just my opinion. Another option is to rebarrel her 270 and keep the belted mag for yourself and build a man's gun, say a 358 Norma wink

Good luck, good hunting, and good times.

Sounds like the bride is happy-happy, or do I mis-understand. If she is happy with her .270, why mess with success???? jack

She is happy with the 270 and she is also a lefty and so is the 338 and I am a righty. Was thinking a caliber bigger than the 270 for the rebarrel.

The .338 'donor action' and you're worried about your wife's objection to recoil?

I like sensible (as in easy to find) chamberings. If not wanting to rebarrel to a 7mm Rem Mag (to exploit that .338 action with its simialr bolt-face), YEAH I'd save that action for another [bruser] project and try to steer Wife toward a .257 Bob or 6.5 Swede or similar. cool

(sometimes "less" is more, right? grin )

Put a break on the 338 and run 225 accubonds and she will love it its what heavy walkers wife uses for elk and she loves it

Or forget the brake and load 200-grain BTs or ABs at around 2,800 fps. They're deadly on elk and recoil won't be that much more than her .270 if the stock fits her.

.264 WM is the easiest. I have a .264 and it is one of my favs. The .257 Weatherby is spendy to shoot. The .257 Roberts (I have one of them also and I like it) is a bolt change. The .264 WM could, should just be a barrel change.

264WM is not hard on shoulders and has a great range of bullets from 85gh hp to 160gr ppsn. Varmints to Moose. Flat shooting and fun to shoot and reload for.

The 264 would be very versatile as others have said and be very similar in performance and recoil to a 270 Win.
