I found a smoking deal on a Rem model 700 338 win mag and it is way to much gun for my wife. She shoots a 270 with 140gr accubonds and kills everything she shoots at. So I want to rebarrel this one to something easier to shoot for her and looking for some imput from you guys.

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

. . . or rebarrel to 264 win mag Just did that with my .338 700 BDL. 257 Wby is another distinct possibility.

Order a PTG after market bolt with a standard bolt face and re barrel to something besides a belted mag. I detest muzzle breaks, but it is still an option if you so wish. 7mm mags have a very sharp recoil, and I would "assume" the 264 and 257 would be also, 338 is more of a push, but that is just my opinion. Another option is to rebarrel her 270 and keep the belted mag for yourself and build a man's gun, say a 358 Norma
Good luck, good hunting, and good times.

Sounds like the bride is happy-happy, or do I mis-understand. If she is happy with her .270, why mess with success???? jack

She is happy with the 270 and she is also a lefty and so is the 338 and I am a righty. Was thinking a caliber bigger than the 270 for the rebarrel.

The .338 'donor action' and you're worried about your wife's objection to recoil? I like sensible (as in easy to find) chamberings. If not wanting to rebarrel to a 7mm Rem Mag (to exploit that .338 action with its simialr bolt-face), YEAH I'd save that action for another [bruser] project and try to steer Wife toward a .257 Bob or 6.5 Swede or similar. (sometimes "less" is more, right? )

Put a break on the 338 and run 225 accubonds and she will love it its what heavy walkers wife uses for elk and she loves it

.264 WM is the easiest. I have a .264 and it is one of my favs. The .257 Weatherby is spendy to shoot. The .257 Roberts (I have one of them also and I like it) is a bolt change. The .264 WM could, should just be a barrel change.

264WM is not hard on shoulders and has a great range of bullets from 85gh hp to 160gr ppsn. Varmints to Moose. Flat shooting and fun to shoot and reload for.
