I have a Savage Model 99 in 300 Savage that I may part with. I don't know a lot about the Savages and don't even know what letter (or letters) go with the model #.
It has a schabel (sp) fore end and a brass counter. It's serial number is 416XXX. The wood and metal are like new and there are no extra holes. The screws also look unmolested. The lever has a lot of case color.
I know someone, or maybe everyone, is going to ask for photos, and I am willing to take some, just not tonight.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks. donsm70

Unless it happens to be a really late G, it sounds like an EG. Prices vary by condition $400-600. G is the take down version, EG solid frame.

The takedown 99G will have a forearm attached with a latch, the solid frame 99EG has the forearm attached with a screw. Pictures would help, but Fireball2 got the range down, though his high end will usually be for a very nice 99EG in 300. There are a ton of those out there, by far the most produced model/cartridge combination made in the Savage 99 family. SN 414,800'ish 99EG:

Thanks guys.
It has a screw, no latch.
Can it be dated by the S/N?
Any more comments?

Best we can do on a date for that serial number is towards the end of 1941. There's no factory records for that timeframe, but that should be close.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Thanks Calhoun.
That's a lot more than I knew before. Any guess on a price range?

Do they really go for that little in that condition? Looking at the various auction sites, it seems they want $500 for one in only fair condition and that has been modified by putting a recoil pad on, or sling swivels, or (and most commonly) a scope.

For example, on one of the auction sites right now there's a .300, appears to be an EG, comes with a replaced buttstock (very good shape, therefore) but with a badly fit recoil pad. The rear sight is missing, and there are cheap scope mounts on it. There's also a lot of the blueing worn off and some visible pitting on the breech block.
There is still a half-day to go on this firearm, and currently it is bid up to $352.
