Went perusing used gun racks today and took a look at one I knew was there and hadn't really payed that much attention to because I felt the asking price too high.

Nice 99R, .300 Savage, Serial number 530,XXX. It's not mint, but pretty darn good. It is drilled and tapped, but the drilling and tapping seems to be factory (????). Oh, and it has a Marbles tang sight on it too.

The asking price is $750, but it's been there a while. I have stuff I could trade off and probably should anyway. Is this guys asking price way, way out there? I got my '99EG for around $350, and my '99 E in .308 for a little less than that. This R seemed pricy, but that was before I really knew the Rs are rarer and better shooters. I'm seriously tempted try some horse trading for this one.

IMHO, it should be pretty minty to get $750, even with the Marbles sight. And, yes, post-war R's were factory drilled and tapped.
Again, IMHO......

Ya, the gun is probably worth $500 and another $100 for the tang sight, he's got it priced to high, unless it's a really nice condition gun.

So Mad Dog how many of your R's would you sell for $500? How about $750?

I'd be all over a $500 358 R, hell even a 308

Jacks Pa, it doesn't matter what you'd sell yours for. It matters what you could pick on up for somewhere else in comparable condition. And the postwar R's and EG's in 300 are just so common they bring that much.

In Canada and the U.S. it ain't that hard to find a 99R in 300.

Ya I'd sell mine for somewhere around $500, $600 with the scope.

It's a 300, not a 358 or a 243R.

Not sure what kind of uncut diamond an R is in your part of the world but check out a few more states, they aren't that high.

OK, kinda what I figured. I really didn't think his asking price was right, it's been there a long time but as booming as the gun selling business seems right now, I doubt I can talk him down to a good deal.

It may sit there a while.

An EG and an R are less than a pound difference, is it really that major those few extra ounces?

By the end of the day that pound difference would feel like five pounds.

LBK - you are right, very right on this point. But... so much easier said than done.... wink

I recall my Dad stayed fit his whole working life. He worked very hard at it but actually, he never gave it a single thought or care. He did hard physical labor his entire life and laughed at people who went to the gym to work out. It never entered his consciousness, the idea one had to "work" at staying fit. I guess I am whining that because I have a desk job, my Dad had it so much easier than me crazy blush

LBK - not that I am suggesting you are doing it, but if ever there is a guy who shouldn't complain about being married... I mean how many married guys have a hunting partner and fellow Savage enthusisast that Nan is??? (i.e. who is also their wife) smile

Correctomundo, unless you have a bum ticker and are wracked with arthritis. (And they wonder why all my hunting rifles weigh in at 6 pounds or less!)

I figured out a long time ago that every little bit counts. If you build a rifle and knock off two pounds, that is another canteen of water you can carry, or a light weight thermos.

I've got to say that there is a big difference in my choice for a gun I will sit in the stand all day vs. walking the woods all day. It's not just the carry weight but how quickly you can get it up to your shoulder when you jump something. Here, weight and barrel length make a big difference to me. For woods walking I generally have stayed at 20 inches for maximum barrel length.
