I have decided to go with a receiver mount rear sight on my savage axis most likely a weaver mount unless I can find one to mount directly to the receiver. I am possibly looking at the xs sights. My question is what height front sight ramp do I need to be lookin at in order to work with the rear sight. Gun smiths are not willing to help in the least here and want me to have all the parts and they just install them.
Any help is awesome

To start, the front and rear sights should be the same height from the center of the bore. That is with the rear sight in it's middle elevated position. So, place the rear receiver sight in it's middle position and measure the distance from the center of the bolt to the center of the sight's hole and write that down. Next, measure the diameter of the barrel where the front sight will go and divide that in half and write that down. Subtract this number from the rear sight figure, and get a base/insert combo that makes up the difference. Of course this is the most basic, initial sight setup since there is no way to predict the end result without sending an actual bullet to the target due to many influential factors like forearm pressure on the barrel etc. But it's a good place to start.
