I'm thinking of getting either a Brux #4 or a Bartlein #3 barrel blank for an '06 build on a pre-64 Model 70 action I've got sitting in a drawer. I chose those two barrels (which are very close to one another in contour) because I want to approximate (albeit, with a long action) the "GAP Non-Typical" type rifle: McMillan Compact pattern stock, heavy sporter barrel. Looking to weigh about 7.5-8.5lbs with a 10-15oz scope on top.

What barrel shank length would be appropriate for that barrel contour, stock, and caliber would be appropriate? Ideally I would like the rifle to balance at or near the front action screw. I'd be using a McMillan standard fill stock.

I don't think you're going to get there on the weight with a M70 action & that weight barrel. I'd guess you're looking at 8-8.25 lbs before you put a scope & mounts on it.

That'd be fine; I'm not too concerned with overall weight.

now when you guys are giving these shank measurements does it include the recoil lug length or separate? thanks

Separate. I always order 3/4" from Mcmillan and end up with an 1-1 1/8". Mcmillan does not always get it exact, so it's easier to remove material rather than add material.

I had the understanding that if someone were to order a 1.5" shank inlet from Mcmillan that would mean I'd be using 1.25" barrel shank plus a .250" Holland recoil lug.

I hope Mcmillan can get it pretty close to exact or this could potential screw me up no?
