Well with the buying frenzy as of late I missed out on a Beretta 92 compact. And with some ammunition flying off store shelves again I am rethinking an auto and considering another wheel gun no need to chase brass (re-loader here) It will be a do all so to say. (SD/ccw?Hunting/target etc)
I had been thinking 627? or 686 both will be cut for full moon clips, I do realize the 627 is big to ccw but that is what suspenders would help with (ha) Other N frames and j frames are covered already Carl

I would seriously consider and am considering a single action set up for both the .45 Colt and the .45 Auto (ACP). Two cylinders, one revolver. Don't discount the SSA as a carry gun. Many a bad man is pushing up daisies who was killed with a SSA. Besides, for us south paws, a SSA is a true south paw revolver.

I used to own a first generation 4" 586. I was not a reliable weapon & it was way too big for concealed carry.
I'm not convinced of advantage of .357 Mag out of a short barreled weapon. Fire one at night & you'll know what I mean. Not only is muzzle flash blinding causing sight picture retention to be difficult, recoil is also sight picture retention prohibitive.
In small barreled handguns, I prefer .38 Special +P 158 grain SWC or SWCHP. I don't think this round gives up much, if anything, to a .357 Mag out of a 2" barrel.
Have you thought about a compact .45ACP such as a Sig? That might be a better option.
Good luck,
L
Sorry, Derby; this was meant for the OP.

Take a look at the Ruger sp101. The 4 inch model.

If you don't mind the size and weight, the eight shot 627 with a 5" barrel is probably the best "all around" hand gun available. That said, I've carried a short barreled single action concealed and never felt "under gunned". Liking what you carry and being able to use it effectively will usually make up for any theoretical short comings.

I'd look for something with a great trigger and adjustable sights. That spells Smith and Wesson to me. I like the 2.5-4 inch models. To keep the bulk down, I think I'd consider a model 66 in either a 2.5 or a 4 inch barrel. The M60 with a 3 inch barrel isn't bad at all. An SA Ruger wouldn't be a bad idea either. E

L frame is too big for CCW IMO. i'd go for a bobbed hammer J frame in 38 +P. the scandiums are ideal but pricey.
