This fell in my lap the other day.

[Linked Image]

Made in 1974 (near as I can tell) and factory 24" bull bbl in 22-250.

Before I get to modifying I want to make sure it isn't rare or anything. It is in awesome shape and in my research it was referred to as rare, but that was in an ad so???

What does everyone think?

IMO the "rare" part of it would be if it was in excellent condition. The rifle you have was known as a Varmint Special and for years that was the standard Remington 700 varmint model, so it is not rare in the sense that not many were made. But like most varminters most of them were shot a lot and ended up looking a little used and tired.

They generally were good shooters and lots of folks really like this particular model. I have one just like it, also in 22/250, and it is one of my favorites. Give it a try before modifying it.

I've got one in 6mm, 22-250, had one in 243, 25-06,223,222. They all shot great then even better when I had them glass bedded. Wish I had a few of the ones I got rid of back. The 22-250 is the most common one I see around but you don't see them much any more.

Do yourself a favor and take it to the range for some testing. You may be content with current accuracy. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The only reason an early Varmint Special could be considered "rare" is that most everyone who has one is very reluctant to give it up; thus, very few show up for sale. This is the rifle that helped make the .22-250 what it is today. Enjoy it!

.

I have one just like yours and in near new condition. It is very accurate (1/2 inch groups and less). My rifle is just as it left the factory except for a trigger adjustment. No need to do any mods or custom work. It does have a 20X Nikon scope.

Go shoot it before you do any modification....
You will probably find it doesn't need any.
IMO it's one of the best rifles Remington ever made.

You didn't use logic or reason to get into this opinion, I cannot use logic or reason to get you out of it.
