I wouldn't go from a 300WM to a 257 Weatherby for a deer rifle. The 25 caliber is far too small for deer hunting but would be ok for a long distance yote rifle. The 25 caliber isn't even legal for deer in most states.
If a man isn't man enough to handle an appropriate cartridge for deer (300 Win Magnum) than he should stop hunting deer. The M70 is an inferior action and should only be used as a range gun or perhaps the smallest of vermin. The 700 with its push-feed and two-pos safety is a far superior design.

I found a wizard and asked him if he can remove a curse I had been living with for the last 20 years. The Wizard says, "What were the exact words that were used to put the curse on you." I say without hesitation, "I now pronounce you man and wife."

Leave it as a 300 win and just down load some rounds for it. Try barnes 130 ttx down loaded to 2500 to 2800 fps. It should kick less and if you need the full power is always there.
Time spent hunting is not deducted from one's lifetime.

Since you already have other rifles that "fit the bill", sell the .300 mag and buy a new hand gun. If you already have enough hand guns, use the money for something sensible like booze, whores, and gambling.
Rich or poor, it pays to have money.

.260s can't kill game, Corky. Try again. I once killed an elephant with a plastic spork. Best rifle I ever had, and you could use the ammo to eat solid AND liquid food. What i'm getting at is, your right, .260s could not even kill an ant point blank. I'm sorry for my bad input. Good ole Tanner has my back.

You seem to really like the rifle, so maybe you could develop a lighter load to mimic the lighter recoil rounds discussed........
Maybe something like a 130 grain TSX and a medium load of IMR 4895.
I know that this is not what a true looney would do but your only cost will be components.
I did this for a gentleman that won a .300 Win Mag and we used IMR 4320 and lighter bullets.

OK...since you asked.... I'll be the odd man out and suggest a 6.5 Rem mag and keep it at a 26" tube.
More bullet choices IMHO

I like those 6.5 rem mag suggestions. Should be a noticeable reduction in recoil especially with that heavy barrel
