I work in one of the area school districts. After the Newtown tragedy, many old rules were again being enforced and new rules put in place to minimize risk to our students. Rules such as no frivolous hall passes - kids can use the bathroom and get drinks between classes, so that we don't have 15 kids wandering the halls at any given moment. Also, teachers were to keep the door closed and locked during class so nobody could just walk in.

Then we had holiday break.

Upon returning to work, I find all doors wide open during class and kids wandering the halls during the class period. I am refusing hall passes and keeping my door closed and locked. The kids (of course) don't like it, but they understand when I explain the reason.

I know there are some teachers here on the 'fire, and I'm wondering if you are having similar experiences.

Your 'locked doors' are going to do about as much good as taking a pizz against a 60 MPH gale!!

You don't really BELIEVE that anything having to do with commonsense measures for school security will really take place....do you?? shocked sleep

If people would actually read the statistics put out by our own DOJ they would realize that on any given year your children are 50 times less likely to be murdered in school than outside of school.

This last shooting is a fluke event, very sad, but no different than 26 people being killed by the actions of any other idiot knowing he is breaking the law.

I am 100% against waterboarding. Splatter their brains out the back of their heads.
