I work in one of the area school districts. After the Newtown tragedy, many old rules were again being enforced and new rules put in place to minimize risk to our students. Rules such as no frivolous hall passes - kids can use the bathroom and get drinks between classes, so that we don't have 15 kids wandering the halls at any given moment. Also, teachers were to keep the door closed and locked during class so nobody could just walk in.
Then we had holiday break.
Upon returning to work, I find all doors wide open during class and kids wandering the halls during the class period. I am refusing hall passes and keeping my door closed and locked. The kids (of course) don't like it, but they understand when I explain the reason.
I know there are some teachers here on the 'fire, and I'm wondering if you are having similar experiences.
