I have buddy that wants to sell me his #1 in 25/06. for some reason I've always wanted to chamber a gun in 25/06 AI. what are peoples thoughts on doing this to a #1. It is a heavy barrel gun by the way.

The #1 V .25-06 as an AI is not going to be all that fast because of the shorter barrel. A regular 1B will give you nearly the same performance with its 26" barrel. And, getting the latter punched out to .257 WBY will get you considerably further along the road to some mystically hot fps goal.

But, truth be told, you are talking small increments of difference between all of them.

If the 1V shoots great as many do, I'd leave it alone and be happy with it.

Do what makes you happy, go for it as you seem inclined to do so.

To me, it's not worth the trouble. If you really need to improve on a 25/06's performance, get a .257 Weatherby. Most of the AIs, including the 25/06, don't offer enough more to justify the work, expense and trouble from my point of view.

I had to sell one of those .25-06 Number One varmint rifles... Needed money for the family and sold several guns. I regret ever parting with that rifle. A tad heavy for general purpose hunting, it was the most accurate factory rifle I've ever owned.

Shot 100 gr Sierras into the .2's at 3300+ fps. That was a rockchuck smacking rifle. Likely would have done well on deer too, had I tried it.

One of those that once gone, is still truly missed, years later.

I'll second what GF1 said. I've been down that road and I don't think it's worth it. Also, there 's no guarantee that a very good shooting rifle will continue that way after the chamber is recut.

Go for it I don't think you will regret it,I have a 25-06 in a 1B,and love it,and the acurracy you would get in the 1mp,plus the better case life, would be a plus, and even in a 24 inch barrel, velocity loss would be nothing ,Ive seen some 24 inch barrels put out a little more speed than a 26,depends on the barrel,I would like to improve mine but to many projects in the oven.Go for IT.......Dave

I have an AH in 25-06 that I've finally been reaquainted with being that I was overseas when I bought it. I can't wait to get a good scope on it and start shooting Florida deer with it.
