Found this Smith Model 58 at a gun show this weekend and fell in love....

Hell, I've been in love with .41s for a long time now

Its in perfect condition

Nice find. I've had several 57s and 657s over the years and wish I had kept one or two.

and to top it off, it is a Nickle model 58..... hand on to that thing.... VERY, VERY nice.

Yeah, from what I have heard, 58's were made from 64-77 and only roughly 20,000 were produced with only 10% being Nickel

and it is mint....this thing has only light drag marks and appears to have barely ever been shot

I will give you 400 bucks for it, okay, i don't want to be cheap, 450bucks.

That one sure stirs the shiny object syndrome.

That would make me forget my new year's resolution....

....beautiful BC....looks really pristine.....is the red ramp factory?? I didn't know they came with that option.....always wanted a nice Model 58......Ken Hackathorn once said that it was the perfect combat revolver.

I think this gun is going to have to get a factory letter at some point.....there are a few "extras" on this thing that I am not seeing on many other 58s but are on the 57s

There isn't much info period on these things

If I am not mistaken, this model 58 has a model 57 front sight, model 57 grips, and a model 57 trigger

My best guess is that someone special ordered this thing and the only reason they didnt get a 57 is they liked the fixed rear sight

the SN is N153XXX

I saw one that sold on GB that was a 1973 and its SN was N185XXX and I know in Mid 1969 they went from a S prefix to the N prefix so it has to be between 1969-1973 manufacture

Nice 58, I'm not generally a fan of nickle 'Smiths but there's something about the 58's profile that looks good in nickle.

Mine came with the larger grips, but standard hammer and trigger. The front sight look slike the red insert was added to the original sight. The M-57 had a much larger ramp front sight - a high ramp ;ile on a m-57 would alter the POI considerably.

I have seen two 58s that came from the factory with Target Hammer and Target Trigger as they were marked so on the box. Almost everyone who has lettered a 58 with TT/TH has learned it was shipped with the Service Hammer and Trigger. Usually the gun was returned to the factory to be "upgraded".

May be wrong but those Target Grips are post 1970s as that style speedloader cutout came well after that gun was made. Target Grips of 1970s vintage only had a small football style cutout...

BUT a BEAUTIFUL gun none the less....whatever you paid it wasn't enough!!

IIRC...over on the S&W Forums some of the numbers experts say that about 20% of the 58s were nickel.... My first 58 back in 1974 was nickel and had two more about 4 years ago...

The new 58-1s seemed to be running 50-50 nickel/blue but the nickel has now been discontinued. Last time I was there three weeks ago Hoffaman's Gun Center in Newington, Ct. still had two NIB 58-1s for $599.99...that is $120 under their last wholesale. He had a stack of 5 each blue and nickel but now just has the two nickel left...that was the day after Christmas...

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has VERY little info on these guns other than total production from 64-77 was 20,287

Magna stocks were factory on 58s and you are correct that these target stocks with the speedloader cutout were not standard for N frames until the 80's

My guess is this gun was sent back to the factory for the work because it definitely has the target hammer and trigger and I closely examined the front sight last night and it looks like a factory job to me

If you post up on the S&W forum there is a very long thread on the 58, unofficial 58 club, The target hammer was a mod used for service guns/58s but that one was never carried, target trigger not sure,
A 58 stoked with 6, 215gr swcs at 1000fps
with a combat trigger and target Hammer carried in a threepersons
