What are you using? Any other place to find some corn cob media other than midway/cabelas? agway?... feedstore etc?

Check at pet stores for crushed walnut... Look at the local grange as well. Its probably only available in 50 pound bags there, but they are only like $15.

I like treated walnut the best, treated corn cob is better for polishing but slower and now experimenting with rice treated and untreated

What are you treating the raw rice with?

A little media polish just like walnut or corn...probably a teaspoon Per tumbler. A little car polsh works too...won't clean as well but leaves things really slippery. Once the media has been treated a few times you can skip a load or two.

Most companies that sell industrial supplies carry walnut & corncob in 50# bags. Take a sample of your tumbling media so they can match what you are using with what you're purchasing. I live in Indy and get mine from a local company that deals in sandblasting supplies. You'll be surprised how little a 50# bag costs compared to what you pay reloading places for a gallon jug full. A group purchase is the way to go as you'll probably never use 50# worth.

I got onto the rice as an idea from another poster at another forum. I tumble in my basement and I hated dumping walnut media down there cause it was so dusty. I found myself dumping in the garage and blowing out ea shell with the air compressor. So I saw this guy using rice and liked it. Went to Wally World and picked up a 5# bag for about $2.79. 2.5#'s is a good match for my midway tumbler so I get two batches for $2.79. I ran my first batch about 12 cycles before tossing it. At that time the rice was breaking down some and was kind of dirty. What I "think" makes the rice work well is that the dirt kind of gets pounded into and held by the rice granual itself. Some have reported packing problems with small cases like .223. I haven't used it on anything smaller than 2506 and it flows out of those like water when you are done. I can say that my experience so far is I will never go back to walnut or corn and my sonic cleaner will probably be collecting dust as well. Give it a try...I'll bet all of you have spent $2.79 more foolishly!!!!!

I use lizard litter with a tablespoon of car polish in it. little dust, and the cases shine nicely.

I have used walnut, corn, and rice. I prefer larger granule walnut, as it doesn't get stuck in the primer pockets as much as corn. All worked well. As one of the posters above said, the rice does seem to abrade into smaller particles much quicker than walnut and even corn.
I didn't think of the bird stuff at pet stores. That's a great idea and much cheaper than any handloading source.
