I know that the coolest hunters clamber over the high country of Montana, Wyoming, or Alaska. Here in Southeast Texas, often we sit in a stand. We sit still, stay awake, stay watchful, and try not to pee our pants. I decided, while engaged in this activity last weekend, that the perfect stand rifle would have a short heavy barrel. Short, so you don't bang into the walls trying to poke it out of the window. Heavy, to help stay steady on target on those long shots.

So I bought a Remington 700 SPS tactical 308. Short 20" bull barrel, so not too heavy. I put a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42 scope on it that I already had on hand. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to shoot it yet because of torrential rain.
Do you have a stand rifle?

I like your style mando. I'm from GA where stand hunting is the norm also. I deer hunt with a rem 700 in 308. It started out as a youth ado rifle I bought for the short 20" barrel. I put a full size dal synthetic stock on it. I have heard this called a poor man's model 7 before. The short barrel is the way to go. My dad shoot a rem 700 LTR in 308 which is the same size. 20" fluted barrel. By the way that LTR is a sweet set up for a factory rifle.

mandocaster,
This was my first season in a stand and I used a rifle with a 24" barrel. I think next time I'll use one of my rifles with a 20" barrel. It should be a bit easier to maneuver. I think my .35 Whelen with a 20.5" barrel may become my stand rifle.

A short `n handy, bedded/floated, 35.5" long Ruger Frontier; 300 WSM. 9" to 11" of shorter OAL with comparable + ballistics to the 24"-26" tubed 30-06s.

Good luck with your new Remy 308. Should work extremely well when you`re stand hunting.

I do. It's about like yours, accept it's not factory and it's a .243.

I can remember a time when all I had was a 30-06 bolt rifle, a 12 guage pump rifle, and a Ruger 10-22. I had all the bases covered. Now I have the bases covered, overlapped and buried in gear!

My "stand rifle" depending on what the stand overlooks, is a Ruger #1 in 405 Winchester. 300 grain Barnes X at 2450 fps. I'm good for gophers to dinosaurs. wink

........Well I see that the little peach fuzzed im-mature gay twit from northern Montana with a fascination for male genetalia,,,,just couldn`t resist.

Imaginations "are" indeed awesome.

Well here is some of that "imagination" for ya to read and mull over within that tiny pea brain of yours, assuming of course you have any comprehension capabilities. Please take note of the 180 grain velocity #s.

www.gunblast.com/Ruger_FrontierRifle.htm

My Frontier has a faster bore than did Quinn`s Frontier test rifle in that article. 2830s with the same 180 gr factory ammo which gave him 2796 fps.

Oh and RL17 on top of that plus shooting VLDs which have less bearing surface touching the bore?

My imagination uh? And you the clown prince from Montana certainly knows all, including everything about the rifles and the chrony #s from those rifles that you don`t even own.

For the first time in my life, yes. Your observations were spot on too (short, quick, quiet, and fairly barrel heavy). Started out with a Ruger 77 with a 24" sporter barrel, but quickly realized it caused problems in the tight confines of the blind.

I opted for a Rem 722, with an after market barrel of some sort, fairly heavy contour (I'd guess it #4, even #5), that is right at 20", and chambered in .300 Savage.

Haven't shot a damn thing, but the rifle's better 'n' the Ruger in this application.

243 would be great, as well. Fine for anything in this neck of the woods, anyway. Except for the giant hog I saw Saturday. 416 Rigby for that sucker.

I have been hunting out of stands for 30 years with a 24 inch barreled rifle. Never really felt that it was too long nor did it cost me any deer. I think you are over thinking things a little much, but I don't argue with what you came up with...should probably work for you just fine.

My family says I over think everything, so you are probably right. I've been hunting out of stands for about as long with 6" to 26" barrels. I have lost shots at deer for a wide variety of reasons, including banging the wall.

In reality, it won't really account for more deer than my regular go-to rifle (22" barrel 270). It's just fun to find an excuse for a new rifle.
