I have never heard anything but good about handi's. Not my kind of singleshot though. .223 for deer I suppose is the way of the future. I'm back a bit further in time - I'd get him a .32-40. but what do I know?

I have thousands of pieces of primed .223 brass from when I used to shoot service-rifle. It kind of made the caliber decision easy.

Goalie,

Check out the remington youth model 700's as well. They have a 20" and a short stock, but the same great action.

I don't want a 1/12 twist, which is what their .223 has. frown

What about Contenders? A highly versatile action with whatever barrels you want. Not too heavy. (not too pretty either :()

I think Contenders are lighter and perhaps cheaper than Encors or whatever they invented after the Contenders.

Safety First !

One thing that always worries me with kids and a lever action or single shot .is lowering the hammer after its been cocked back. Think hammer block safety . Contenders are a very good choice later you get a 7x30 or 6.8 .

Hey Stan I can't remember do them handi's have a safety?

I suppose but I think of the dozens of purpose-made "boy's rifles" from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that really were made for boys. They include my personal Hopkins and Allen 722 and Winchester 1890 and how they taught me and several other generations good gun handling.

While I hear you on the hammer let-down issue, they also excel at instantly telegraphing their condition from almost any reasonable distance. Are they cocked?

The singleshot break actions have the advantage of being easily unloaded w/o cycling the action also.

Lots of choices and lots of trade offs.

Happy Birthday,Fluffy.

mule1,the Handi rifles do not have a safety but the Rossi single shot rifles do.

Stan in SC

The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70,it's almost a religion.

If you have to take a second shot then you probably shouldn't have taken the first shot.
