This is from the Wall Street Journal: it seems that all the bureaucratic red tape in Connecticut (although not only there--NJ & NY too) won't even let people repair their homes...

Crazy. I honestly wouldn't be broken hearted if I never had to set foot in the Northeast again...

I realized long ago, the best you can do is rent from the government.

I strongly suggest researching the rent due to 'em, prior to making any purchase (or building).

Yep, Americans have no true property rights regarding real estate. We are mere tenants of the state. Try not paying your rent (called property tax) and see how long they let you remain on "your" land.

It's not just the Northeast. In most cities in the U.S if your house is extensively damaged part of the repair cost is to bring it up to current code. No, you can't use lead pipe and asbestos insulation anymore. If you are in a flood zone you might not be allowed to rebuild at all in that location being taxpayers don't want to keep paying to rebuild by selling foolish owners flood insurance at way below market rate if there even was a market.
