We started shooting gongs earlier and I had asked you guys for info, which you all gave me a lot of good stuff and it has all helped out and I want to say THANK YOU and I still failed to do my part. Several of you told me to use the Hornady 162 Amax in my 280 AI and there has been a few discusions on the Amax's use on game animals. My goal for the year was to kill a deer at 500 plus yards and I guess I screwed it up. My shooting bench I use for load testing and sight ins is right out my back door and yesterday I walked thru the house and glanced out the front window and there she was, standing broadside at the back of the bean field. I grabbed the 280, a bullet and a chair to sit on and slithered out the back door. Did my adjustments on the scope, settled me in to the stock... calmed the sight picture down and stroked the trigger.
THAT is when I foiled my 500yard + goal for the year.I needed to do the Sierra sneek for 15 yards before I shot. She took the bullet at 485 yards and that Amax killed her DEAD DEAD !! Thanks for all the info on shooting longer ranges and the 162 gr Amax. I guess my goal for next year is to move my shooting bench back another 15 yards.

Congrats! 485 ain't 500, but it's still a long poke. Now you have something to look forward to for next year smile

Thanks! I have a bench setup @ 611 and had set there one evening but nothing showed up.
Playing with the gongs at longer ranges sure will change your opinion about the guys doing long range hunting. Never dreamed I would be shooting 3 1/2 inch groups at 600 yards. And the gong going off.... Just ,good clean fun.

Yup, set up a 12" plate (roughly the size of deer vitals) at various ranges, and you'll be surprised what you can do at range, if there isn't much wind. When the wind picks up, you'll be surprised how much you have to learn grin

You do't think the shot is far enuf away so you crawl backwards to where you want the shot to be from. My goal was a 500 yard kill. Needed to unsneak 15 yards.

YA.... next year......
Maybe I will move my bench backwards 15 more yards, HA !!
SOO COOL to have to wait for the bullet to hit the deer, tho... and that AMax is some deadly bullet.

I went hunting with Tatelaw(roger) yesterday for the finally day of MS rifle season. I took my 7mm sendero and Roger had his 257 bee that he just got. We was watching a couple in the 6-700 yard range when two does appeared at 130yrds. By the time he shot the doe she was 220yards and he dropped her. My chosen doe ran out to 480 yards and stopped broadside. The 150 nbt dropped her like a rock out of my 7mm rm sendero. Not my farthest shot but still a decent poke.

Congrats on your deer. It shure is nice to practice all summer and finally get to twist the knob and watch them fall!!

Sunday is the last day of season here and I could get another doe tag but I'm not sure I want to bone and grind another deer. I have a bench set up @ 611 yards and was really wanting to hit one from there. I'll see if my trigger finger or my want to not do another deer wins.

Well that's easy for me, all that practice would make me pull the trigger. Just think it'll be almost a year before you can do it again

Congrats on the 485, it is addictive, next year you will be wanting and ready to kill them at 700 plus. Nothing like watching one crumple at 500 plus.

I measured out as far as I can go and still see where the deer come out at and I can back to about 890 yards. Going to practice all summer and see what the does look like from there next year. Really, all I was wanting was a 500 yard kill. When I was about 20 years old, that was one long poke and now it is just shooting but it is so much fun......

It is most certainly addictive. I want to stretch farther all the time
