I used a "1885" browning in 30/06 for years....now a BLR ....sold off the '06 an got a 45/70 in the same "1885"...don't see why a gun made 10 years latter (1895) would not work wink

Sounds like a nice rifle. I always fancied one in .35WCF though.....

We got a Hi-Grade in .405 Winchester when they first became available.
Been hunting with it ever since. Fine weapon.

If you decide you want to let it go, I have dibs! Gotta love those 35's. Take good care of it, rust is a constant battle with blued steel around these parts. If it were mine and dedicated for hunting I would strongly consider a good coating of ceracoat or the likes. Alaska hunting rifles are tools, not investments, IMO.

Good luck, good hunting, and good times.

gleninjuneau i will keep that in mind. the twist rate is a 1-10 so I have plans on shooting long and heavy bullets. The bluing on these guns is first rate and will keep it this way for now but a ceracoat will probably be in future. I have a williams peep on it and it shoots really well with everything i have feed it including 200 grain core lokts . Want to try some 275 and 310 woodleighs.

I have vintage Winchester 1895s in both 405Win and 35 WCF. I've shot three bull moose with the former and two with the latter. The 35 WCF is just a light 35 Whelen. I handloaded 250 gr. Nosler partitions. The moose succumbed very quickly. Enjoy your 1895 in 35 Whelen.

Some of the various coating systems I have seen, offer what almost looks like a gloss blue. They don't have to just be flat/matte colors. Best of both worlds.

I've had two Browning 1895s in 30-06 and really enjoyed shooting them. I shot the head off a cormorant at 250 yards shooting off hand with mine. It was one of those shots that I'll always remember. I bought the second one used with the intentions of having it rebored to .35 Whelen or .338-06. I'm just not ready to take the plunge just yet.

I have an original .405 tha I got from my great uncle of Granger, WY. It has the straight grip with a curved butt plate and is the worst rifle to shoot of any I have ever owned.

For country with humped bears I much prefer the Model 71 in .348.

If I was getting one I'd look for a 303 Brit. Maybe that's the British Empire Loyalist in me coming out.
