Do you purchase a SS Ruger (new),or whatever, just to rebarrel to get what you want or... Do you just order a new MRC chambered in cartridge desired? Ive never owned/fondled an MRC rifle sooo, im not sure about their 'desirability'.

I guess if it was a choice between a standard Hawkeye with a rebarrel or a MRC, I would give the mrc a try. If it was a ss/lam Hawkeye, I'd probably do the rebarrel and matte finish....but I just like those
...on earth as it is in Texas.

I own one rifle made on an MRC action as well as several Rugers. I could go either way, but would lean towards a Ruger if I could pick up a donor for close to $400.
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum. I do tend to fit in well wherever I go in person. The campfire is the most outside exposure I get. No TV, no newspaper.

Bought a ruger 308 stainless and converted it to 260. And recently bought a 375 ruger on sale in december that will soon become a 330 Dakota. A sand blast stainless barrel matches perfectly. I copy the factory contour to the end of the stock then from there run to whatever length and muzzle diameter I choose.

Seems to be unanimous... RUGER and rebarrel. Anyone care to give a few reasons why? Personally, I detest Ruger stocks, comb is too low. BDL's and Sako Hunter stocks fit me much better.

I'd go with the MRC. I like the trigger, safety, and bottom metal better on the MRC than the Ruger.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm looking to start playing with a few new calibers, just trying to figure out the best way to go about it. I keep buying rifles with the intention of rebarreling at sometime, I then screw around and shoot them, start liking them and find a reason not to tear them apart.

I went both ways. Own a MRC to which I had a Lilja 35 Whelen barrel installed and then glassed it in a McMillan stock. Then there is one of my 9,3x62's which is a Shilen rebarreled stainless Ruger 30-06.
The Ruger route is about 40% less and you end up with a laminated stock vs the Mc and they hold 4 down compared to the MRC which holds 5. I am a big fan of the MRC actions as I love the Win 70 style trigger.
My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I'm just not finding these $350-$400 donor rifles everyone is talking about. I know what you mean! I suppose it can happen and it has happened to me on one Ruger 77 I got on GB but those sub-$400 LH rifles are pretty hard to come by.

I'm just not finding these $350-$400 donor rifles everyone is talking about. How fast do you want it? If you want it NOW, you're going to pay whatever someone wants NOW. Have some cash ready and bide your time. I bought a Model 77 MKII in .270 WCF for $425 with shipping that later became a 6.5x55mm and I bought a Model 77 Hawkeye in .308 WCF for $450 with shipping that is due to become a .257 Roberts...shortly. I've seen several others go for those prices and less.

I bought a Ruger MkII blue/walnut in 300wm in excellent condition a couple years ago for $350 at the local gun shop...like BT says, look around and be patient there are deals to be had once in a while. If you want it now....break out your checkbook.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
