Timothy Treadwell (changed his name to be more gnarley) goes off to protect the grizzly bears. He believes that he can live in harmony with the bears and they will accept him as one of their own (man was an admitted pot and heroin user). He carries no firearms or bear spray believing the bears will not hurt him because they can sense that he is there to help and protect them. He tried bear spray once and cried because it hurt the bear and vowed to never use it again. He walks up to bears and baby talks to them. He says he loves them and gives them all cute names. He talks to them and even reaches out and touches them. He admits he is there against forest service orders and is breaking 2 federal laws. One in making a permanent camp and the other in approaching within 100 feet of the bears. He also wishes that he was gay and that he ws a bear and that could give up on eating eating human food to eat what the bears eat. Tim convinces his girlfriend who is admittedly afraid of bears to join him. Eventually, the inevitable happens and Timothy is attacked. Audio was running and Tim is heard moaning while his girlfriend was hitting the bear in the head with a frying pan and yelling. Eventually, the bear turned on her too and they both died. They are celebrated as heroes and their film won at Sundance and will probably be nominated for future awards.

Reality Check.... All wild animals are naturally wary of humans. Tim gets closer and closer to the bears and believes they are accepting them as one of their own. The bears are actually losing their instinctive fear or wariness of humans. Eventually, the bears figured out that Tim was no threat to them and ate him and his friend. Tim lived long enough to accomplish a dangerous thing. He showed an entire population of bears that humans are not a threat to them, and to associate us with food. I'm not saying because they ate him, but also because he made a permanent camp in bear country. He stayed in one place and I'm sure the smell of food and human scent had to be built up around the place. I can't believe Tim visited schools and gave talks about protecting the bears to children. If I saw home movies of a man walking up to wild grizzlies and baby talking to them, and trying to touch them, I'd try to have him locked up. Not only as an example of irresponsible behavior, but for harassing the bears.

The guy was a [bleep] moron. He got what he deserved. His ignorance caused someone else to loose their life as well. But his girlfriend couldn't have been all that smart if she was dating this idiot. Maybe Darwins' "Theory Of Evolution " isn't just a theory.--Mike

Poor guy and gal, got run out of California (you know you have problems then)!

At least he finally had some sucess in life, becoming one within the bears, he, he, he,he!

Are these the same two dumb a#$@s that the Russians run out of their country for messing with the brown bears?

Never will forget, the couple in Russia claims they had to put up an electric fence around their cabin and garden to keep the bears out of their garden. This, while they were "raising/habituating" two little brown bear "orphan" cubs they "found". Bet that fence sure would have stopped MR. BEAR when he showed up for some cub protein!

This was National Geographic program a couple of years ago.

can I reply to my own post?

There's a great book called The Blue Bear about an adventure guide that a famous Japanese photographer hired to take him out in the Alaska Wilderness. He wished all his life to photograph a blue bear, but on a photography trip to Kamchatka, Russia he was killed by a grizzly. It's a stark contrast to Tim and his girlfriend. John Krackauer if I spelled it right also wrote a book called Into the Wild about a college kid who decided to do the Thoreau thing and walked into the Alaska wilderness. He wanted the experience but did not have the skills to stay alive in the wilderness.

Super photography but he was a burned out druggie, nothing more and nothing less. Sad about the girlfriend but as an adult, she was responsible for her own actions and consequences.

I thought there was a really funny part in it though, when he finds the dead bee and cries over it.

What was even funnier is when the bee moves!

People like Treadwell are "self-eliminating". I don't have any problem with that. However, I do have a problem with those who cause others who may not be aware of the dangers and cause them to suffer the same fate.

I knew a fellow private pilot who sometimes drank some booze at a bar, then flew his Beechcraft Bonanza... at night... a BIG "no-no"!!! I knew he was wrong... but I knew he knew the dangers of doing it, so I didn't say anything to him. It was his "business".

However, it was a sad day when I learned from another pilot that he and a buddy "had a few" the previous night, then invited 2 women they met at the bar to take an "evening ride" in the Bonanza, a slick, fast, retractable landing gear 4-place private aircraft.

Between the night flight and the booze, he got disoriented and dug a hole in the terra firma... I.E., he crashed and burned killing all four people on board.

He and his buddy (also a pilot) KNEW the dangers of what they were doing, but the 2 women passengers didn't... and THAT is wrong... just as Treadwell was WRONG to take a woman along with him and play stupid games with HER life around large bears.

Unfortunately, Treadwell's girlfriend also "paid-the-price" for Treadwell's ego and arrogance... and like the pilot I knew who drank booze... THAT was the SAME KIND of "WRONG"!

Strength & Honor...

Well said Accraholic. They, too, breed.

Treadwell (not his real name).......pray for the soul of the poor bear.

"I'm touching her poop" pretty much summed up the whole program. With the Arnold sounding narrator, the thing should have been called "Girlie Man"

This brings up a disturbing question............................

Given that we mostly all love our dogs...........................

Is sticking our hands into their droppings going to become fashionable?
