A little bottle of hot sauce. A packet of salt. A little bottle of oil. Some heavy tinfoil. A couple cloves of garlic and a couple sprigs of rosemary.

Sometimes little meals of opportunity present themselves. smile

If you have a food dehydrator, try drying peaches, or better yet, nectarines. They're great.

Beef Jerkey. Even though it's light weight in the first place I can't go on a hike without it.

Even lukewarm to warm peaches are a savior.

In VN there was always a scramble to grab the peaches. A tin of peaches held great barter leverage.
Those mini poptop cans are great to have in a daypack or in the truck.

Try a Platypus bladder, it's like an ounce. Plus it comes in the 2 sizes you need, 5th and litre.

I've planted a half dozen peach trees in my yard. When the 'crop' comes in, there is simply no way to eat them all before they spoil (I'd estimate 50-60 peaches per tree). I picked up a dehydrator and made myself a couple batches of varying moisture levels... My children (age 8 and 2 at the time) sampled my work and labelled them "peach candy".

They will trade a whole pillowcase of sugary halloween candy for just a tiny ziplock of dehydrated peaches...

Well dried peaches will keep all year in the fridge... or several weeks in a pack. The natural sugar content will really pick you up in a hurry when you need it... perfect emergency energy food.

The trick to producing good dried peaches...

#1 - two second dip in boiling water to get the skin off
#2 - cut two large 'halves' off either side of the pit...this is your prime product....everything else is scrap and goes in the blender....pour the resultant sauce onto sheets of wax paper to make fruit leather (also with the dehydrator)

We've dried a lot of nectarines with the skin on. It's a lot less messy that way.
