Everyone has their favorites, but what are some of the more popular cartridges that you would never consider for you own long range rig?

Necked down I bet it might be really a LR shooter.

Lots of folks love the 257 Wby. Others, I would guess, would never buy one or have one built because of the freebore. Many love the 308 Win, others think it pales in comparison to the 6.5s and 7mms. Etc., etc.

But your answer was cute.

"Cute?", damn, I'm slipping something terrible here......

Okay, I've read a bunch of the threads on long range shooting here and I disagree with some of the serious advice- The responses to Bagabuck were hilarious, however.

Okay, I've seen many guys say the 30-06 would be fine as a long range weapon. Maybe in a practiced sniper's hands but not in the hands of most hunters and only to take down men, not for larger game, IMHO.
Also, the .308 Win is not in my book of long range weapons. It may be fine for taking out men at extended ranges, but low retained energy levels at much past 450 yards renders it pretty useless to efficiently anchor large game at extended ranges.

Lots of cartridges in these ranges with bullets that typically have low BC's and SD's just don't add up when choosing a long range cartridge. In my book, long range starts with good BC's starting in the .600 range. I believe that is why the 6.5's and heavy.284 (7MM), .300, .338, and like bullets are preferred for this task.

That should get the natives talking......

Interesting, seeing that I've taken game easily to almost 800 yards with my 308 so far.... Not moose or brown bear but deer and pigs for sure easily.

Tanner I agree! I spent some time with a 50 and a 338 Lapau this past Saturday and I'm just not mad enough at anything to go that route eek

I have been playing the longrange game for about 15 years now the cartridges "I would never consider" are Weatherby (Most high B.C.bullets like a throat of somekind instead of freebore) and Lazzeroni (Low B.C. bullets at warp velocities)

270 would top my list.
I've been told by a reliable source, that Ingwe has one for everyday of week!

It's about bore sizes to me.

Just look at and compare long range bullets, and there is your answer.

Some bore sizes just cannot hang with others, even after MV is put into the equation. Then you might want to consider barrel life too, if you shoot much.

I'd have zero interest in anything .257". .277", or 8mm.

Shane, those are voids in my arsenal as well.

It's too bad someone doesn't make a .25 cal bullet with a good BC.

About the only way I'd do up a .270 anything ever again, is if Matrix sold those 165 VLD's for less than $30/100, like the A-Maxes. Otherwise... a guy would be crazy to not take the most BC for the least change. Good call, Shane.

I think the big thing that holds back the .257" and .277" bores, are the industry standard twist rates.

Both bores could have potential for bullets in the .6+ BC range if they were twisted tighter than 1/10.
