I believe it was the initials of Marlin's founder.

I know the initial offerings were not so good, but, from what I have heard, the QC has improved quite a bit.
But, it's hard to get past the bad rep.

From what I understand, they have improved quite a bit. I can't speak from first-hand experience because I've really tried to stay out of the stores, but from what's being reported, things are better in regards to quality.

Where is the JM proof mark found, barrel or receiver?

Thanks, Jim. I'm going to check out a 336 in .35 Rem this week and was wondering where to look for it. I know the rifle is pre-cross bolt safety but that's about all.

If it's pre safety it's pre Remington by a long ways. No need to even look for the proof mark to determine that.

What dose the JM stamp ,mark stank for ? proof stamp before Rem took over......and then flushed Marlin down the toilet........ Even after Marlin was sold, the JM stamp was still placed on the barrel. I think they did this for two years. It wasn't until the plant was shut down, and the rifles were built in Ilyon that the JM stamp dissapeared.
