Picked up a Savage HMR 17 last week from Cabela's and looking for recommendations on what ammo to use for Squirrel hunting. Right now about the only options I see locally are Federal V-Shok (17 grs), CCI Game Point (20 grs) and CCI V-max (17 grs). Thanks for your help.

Go down to the small game hunting, and look at the thread, there. I asked the same question.

It will work just fine, just depends on if you want to eat them.. It can be a little explosive to say the least.

Thanks! Hopefully there will be some 22 LR back on the shelves before squirrel season. I haven't been squirrel hunting in over 40 years but now that I'm retired I'm looking forward to spending as much time as I can hunting. Thanks again.

I don't like the plastic balistic tips or any of the 17 grns in general...The mst all the 20grn in the hollow point works well in my rifle.

You get the best ballistics and the most explosive on impact from the 17 gr ammo. If your planning on eating it then I would use the 20 gr ammo.

I asked the same question. I am going to be using V Maxes in my new 17.
