4638 doubles as an instant coffee in the backcountry. FACT!

I was eager to try R17 when it was first introduced and worked up a load in a .300 Win Mag without pressure signs and within the parameters established by the powder manufacturer. The temperature was in the 70 degree range. Later I fired the same load at 95 degrees and experienced sticky bolt lift. Other loads fired that same day with Hodgdon powders showed no significant change. I have no information about cold weather performance. I am currently about 1000 miles from my reloading notes so cannot report velocities or powder charges.

See them occasionally up here, too!

Really rubs it in when they put one in the book, and don't even care.

Whoa, now that is a monster! Congrats on a great trophy.
That is a neat camo pattern you are wearing too! Matches the rifle. grin

I love this kind of discussion! but it really doesn't matter when it gets reeeely cold! Here is a pic of my good buddy with a calf elk that she shot with her .308 and blue box Federal 150's when it was -35.
When it's that cold, you must get so close it doesn't matter what you are shooting or how fast the bullets are flying. Bulky clothes and gloves make you do that, precision at long range is out of the question. If you get close enough, just be glad that you can still squeeze the trigger and hit what you aim at. She did.

Was guiding a friend of mine up here a few years ago, and he whacked the big dude in front. We had watched them for a while, and I made sure he was on the big one, as he had only ever hunted deer before, and even average caribou look huge to guys seeing them for the first time.

The "smaller" one would have made almost anyone happy, but this one scored over 400 green. It is mounted, and has been scored since at 397, but never submitted.

After the big guy was down, the other one wandered over to take a look at his travelling companion. I shot the second one for meat, as they are about as fine eating as you can get, if you take them before the rut.

Bob, they are both mountain caribou. The bulls are the size of mature elk, and really big ones can crowd 1000 pounds!
