What primer do y'all use for your .223 loads?

I have been reloading for 30 years and generally follow Speer's advice concerning primer selection. But I only started loading for .223 a year ago. Speer manuals call for magnum primers with all ball powder loads. Nosler manuals show standard primers for all .223 loads. The Lyman manual I have calls for magnum primers only for a few of the loads, and the Hodgdon manual shows standard primers for all loads.

Up to this point the load I like best is 26 grains of H335, a 53 grain TSX, and a CCI 450 (small rifle magnum). I am going to try this same load with a Federal small rifle primer.

So, what primer do you tend to use?

CCi BR4 or Rem 71/2. I've never had a problem with CCi SR primers but the bench rest primers give you a warm, fuzzy feeling that worth the few extra bucks.
FWIW, I use H335 and have never had ignition problems with standard primers.

IMO you never need to use a magnum primer in a 223.
In my bolt action rifles I use Fed 205's in my semi-autos I use Rem7 1/2

CCI 450

Started with limmited supply of rem 7-1/2 they ran out, bought the CCI model tried them in loads I worked up with the rems, a flawless transision and never looked back since.

Glad I bought the amount I did four years ago too, for some reason they are not so common right now....

I have not used any ball powders, but use my .223 alot in the winter months and have had 0 issues in the 'go-bang' dept. Don't know if it really makes any differents, Bad or problematic primers for me have been so rare, I almost believe that a bad primer dosn't exists.... Any primer size or application

Powder and bullet seat depth seem to be more problematic than primers in load trial and error....

I have used about everything available, but my preference is the CCI 450. I load for 3 AR 15s, and prefer the slightly thicker cups as an extra measure of safety. I do tend to get lower shot to shot variation with them also.

+3 or 4 ... Used these in a .223 hand load that would consistently shoot in the .3's out of a factory HB Savage that I wish I still had....

Prefer the RP 7 1/2, have used CCI-400, 450, BR-4, Win SR, Fed 205 and most recently Wolf 223. Have had good results with all of them. Would use the Rem 7 1/2 if available, but have a good stock of Wolf 223. Just glad to have a good supply on hand these days.
