Will a 308win be too much pressure built on a 95 Chilean mauser. Found one at Gander Mountain this morning. Looked like a good project gun.

There were a few Chilean '95's re-heat treated that may work. If the rifle is not 8x57 - there's no chance it was re-heat treated.

For some great info on that subject, search James Wesley, Rawles.

The gun is already 308 win. I'll do the search on Wesley and Rawls and see what turms up. Thanks

Of course there's nothing wrong with a 7x57, or 6.5x55 project either - and they'd work just dandy.

If that's already a custom, I'd want a 'smith's opinion, or I'd walk the other way. If it's a military conversion, buy it.

I am not sure if military conversion or not. The stock is military that has been sporterized. the barrel looks to have been cut off at the last step down.

As far as a 6.5x55, I have a numbers matching Carl Gustuv 96 mauser to build on.

Thanks for the help.

The 95's a s I recall were built in Germany and not Spain or Mexico. The German Mausers were supposed to have better steel. My bet is someone put a small ring 7.62 barrel from a converted 93 onto the 95 action. Probably for the same reason. The 93's were "iffy" supposedly but the Chlileans were prefered because of where they were made. I'm no expert but that is my suspicions. kwg

My 1895 Chilean Mauser was built by Lowe in Berlin. It is a 7x57 Mauser. Someone did a real nice job sporterizing it sometime way back when. I use the low pressure loads and it is very accurate. Many loads (factory and mine) coming in sub MOA at 100yds.

Went back tonite to look. It is built in Berlin by Lowe. The barrel has 2 steps just like the one Rattler posted. It still has the military iron sights and safty. The hang tag says 7.62x 51 but the description says 7.62x54[some originals were 7.65x54]. The military stock has been spoterized, but has what looks like arsenal repairs. There is no caliber mark on the barrel. At $199 it just caught my eye.I am just a fan of old Mausers.

I checked out Rawls info. He says some were reheat treated and made into 308win, 250 and 300 savage,8x57 and some into 30-06. Is there any way to see if it is reheat treated? If so at that price it would be fun to play with.

You might want to check out this website on how these rifles were converted to 308.

My understanding is if the rifle is chambered in 6.5, or 7mm, it's not been re-heat treated at an arsenal.

If it's a miltary-arsenal re-heat treated reciever, it will be chambered in 8x57, or .308 Win (very few), or .30-06 Springfield (fewer still). The 8x57's are suitable for low pressure chamberings like 6.5x55, 7x57, or .300 Savage. The ocassional .308, or .30-06 are good for anything the action will hold.

A Mauser competent 'smith would be on my "to do" list - right after I bought it for the $200.00 price tag.
