The location and spacing of the holes looks like it was a Weaver T7 mount. That mount is for 3/4" scopes only.

Your rear sight is a windgauge so it is adjustable. The knobs will move it right and left.

Since it is already drilled, I would drill the receiver and put a one piece base on there. That way, you can put whatever scope you want on there.

It looks as though your 250/3000 is pretty early. My special order rifle, 178174, was delivered to a corporate officer on June 21, 1915. It had been completed just a couple of days before.

I think the 303 is an 1899G. Take down version of the 1899 short-rifle. Seral# range will help for sure. I'm no authority, some of them have posted in this thread, but you might want to run different threads for the different rifles. That's a cool bag, did it and the rifle come together?

The first set of pictures is the 250/3000 and the holes drilled in it. The second set of pictures is a 303 99 F i believe with a carrying case for you guys to look at, the third a 99F 300 savage that I believe has a replacement stock and a bent lyman.

Yes, the first rifle is a standard model made by Savage which they just called the Savage 1899 250-3000 or some call it the 250-3000 deluxe. The holes in the side are for a T-7 mount... unfortunately, as far as I know, they were never made for a 1" scope. So your options would be, drill more holes for standard mounts, buy a homemade mount from Mike (Lightfoot), or buy a set of 1" stiths. The latter two options will not involve any new holes and only Mike's homemade mount will allow you to use a variable 3-9x40.

The second gun is likely a 99F but could be an 1899H (what is the serial). the carrying case looks to be from Savage as well. You can see them for sale in the catalogs of the era... you see them with guns or seperate time to time. They are neat to have but don't seem to add an appreciable amount of value. That might differ if you got a factory letter on the gun that stated it was sold with the case. As for cleaning it... I probably just wouldn't but if you feel that you must...be very careful... I did not look at your pictures exceptionally closely but it did appear that the underlying finish is all original (likely to appear heavily crazed under bright light)... you are likely to do more damage than good in terms of value but its your gun.

I would concur that the third gun was likely a 99F (I don't think the longer front sight base was used on the 1899Hs) and was restocked... very nicely done as was the checkering but looks to not be factory in my opinion.

Is the serial # of the 300 between 380000 and 420000??

Both front sights are the integral type which I don't think I have ever seen on a factory rifle above 380,000 before but I learn something new every day.

The 300 serial number is 2730**
The 303 " " 2958**

trade talks are fine... the lyman sights should be pretty straight forward... what is your concern?

I would like to get a modern 99F and a 99C with the barrel boss in .308. How much lighter is a 99C with the barrel boss compared to the regular 99C? I have several savages especially a mint 99R and an EG (300 sav) I have them listed on gunbroker right now, that I would like to sell or trade. But if you look at the picture of my 300 with the lyman peep it is bent to the right. What is the best way to fix it back to straight?

Ignore him. He's a purist. If anything deviates from factory he won't touch it. It's your gun. Do what you want. It will only make original rifles a better buy.

That is what I find fascinating..... what is original? This 250/3000 has been refinished and engraved and holes have been drilled through it. My eyes have gotten to the point I need a scope or at least a peep to accurately shoot a weapon. If I am not gonna shoot it it will sit with me unfired until the auction my widow will have. Will she even care it is not as valuable as it could have been? Cmon man!

Original is being in the same configuration as when it left the factory. The minute those two holes were drilled and tapped in the side of the receiver, or any or all of the other things you mentioned, it was no longer original. That doesn't hurt it's utility or function as a shooter. It just hurts its value as a collectible. Don't see anywhere in my posts where I said you shouldn't shoot it. Its your rifle, not mine. Do what you want with it.

Scrap it and put a scope on the. 308f you are looking for.
