This is slightly off topic. If the U S Army had adopted the 7x57mm instead of scaling that cartridge up to 7.62x63mm, would we be extolling the virtues of the 7x57? What say you? That is most likely correct. The original M1 Garand fired a .276 caliber bullet but the Army Brass ordered the rifle redesigned to 30 caliber because they had so much 30 caliber ball ammo laying around. Evidently, back then the Govt was interested in saving money.

Who,if anyone, was to the 30/06 what Jack OConnor was to the 270? I know there were lots of folks extolling the virtues of the round. Who,in your opinion, was the father of the 30/06? Townsend Whelen.

I remember Charles Askins, Jr. calling it "pipsqueak". Always made me chuckle when I read that. And yet he loved the 8mm-06. How much difference is there really between the two?

Have times changed?? Oh Lord! Yesterday, 2-11-13 Diane F. was shown stating "America does not have a spending problem". Doesn't a 16 --T R I L L I O N $-- debt mean anything?? Obviously it doesn't bother many legislators.

Evidently, back then the Govt was interested in saving money. Douglas Macarthur himself made the call to stay with the '06. The .276 Pederson was considered ideal for the M1 Garand and the .30-06 had to be downloaded and stuffed with a 150 grain bullet to work in the Garand.

There was a Capt. E.C. Crossman, who was a contemporary of Whelen's, who was also an early champion of the .30-06 and the Springfield rifle. Also one of the first to have custom rifles built on that action and write about them.

That statement is incorrect according to Major General Julian S. Hatcher in "Hatcher's Book of the Garand". Chapter 6: "The M1 rifle was designed specifically for this long range ammunition, and all the tests leading to the adoption of the rifle were made with the M1 ammunition, which was the service ammunition when the rifle was standardized in January 1936."
Shew me thy ways, O LORD: teach me thy paths. "there are few better cartridges on Earth than the 7 x 57mm Mauser" "the .30 Springfield is light, accurate, penetrating, and has surprising stopping power"

Garands still have to be downloaded or you bend the operating rods.

No, they don't have to be downloaded, that's an old wives tale. You must use the correct burning speed powder, then load to original specs.

No one needed to champion the 30-06 as it quickly made an honest name for it's self - The Roosevelt Safari certainly helped - as did a couple of World Wars - but the fact is that It worked great on long range mtn game and still does as well as on all American big game and it still does Including even the largest and most dangerous and it still does What is not to like ?
Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master Guide, Alaska Hunter Ed Instructor FAA Master pilot www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.comAnyone who claims the 30-06 is not effective has either not used one, or else is unwittingly commenting on their marksmanship.

458. What the hell is that first critter? Cool looking fella. You do know ths scope fell off your rifle in the last pic. I'm not sure I'd want to face down that old boy with a 458,much less a 30/Otter. Nice!

I shoot my 6.5x55 60% of the time, my .270 35% and my 30-06 5% of the time. The 30-06 hasn't been hunting in many years but I sight it in every August. In Texas there is no game that requires a 30-06. If I lived in Alaska or Montana however, I bet I would shoot my 30-06 60% of the time and my 6.5x55 5% of the time. I do believe the saying that a .270 will do anything a 30-06 will do and vice-versa.
Don't roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

458. What the hell is that first critter? Cool looking fella. Ibex. I'm thinking possibly from Turkey as he's written an article on a, assumedly, previous trip to that country for Ibex.

The '06's champion was the '06 itself. Like Joe Montana & Sandy Kofax, a few gems in life need no champion.
