Do they work like Bergers?

WTF?

Are we still talking 140 grain bullets here?

Appreciate the (actual) 140g VLD info, Gents.

Thought I'd try those in a 7x57 this year for deers out to the around 300 yards.

Very interesting bullet.

The Hunting VLD's are some bad little bullets. They make a lovely red gooey soup in the boiler room and the animals I have shot with them, have all decided that they would like to lay down a rest for a bit...quickly.

The Target flavor of VLD's, I would not recommend for hunting applications, as the thicker jacket precludes them from the massive expansion the Hunting bullets have.

Yes, sticking to the original question is hard I suppose. I will start using them this weekend and report how H4350 does. It may not be ideal, but I have large quantities of it and am more interested in accuracy than actual velocity.

Might work pretty well...h4350 does the best for accuracy in my 7x57 and RL19 for fps...

small group is 140 VLD, data is on target. Heading to the range now to test some more, see if I can duplicate.

I did a quick test of 48gr H4350 and 41gr Varget today. Both shot 5 shots under an inch but the varget had the edge. With Varget I could seat to magazine length. With H4350 I was compressing well before I was even close. I think tomorrow I'll do more testing with varget.

Does anyone have the Berger manual? What powders did they use?

I don't have a Berger manual-but if you have Big Game try it. Have used in both 120 & 140g and gotten book fps w/excellent groups in two 7-08s.

tomk, what's your go-to load for the 120 & 140 with Big Game. I have some and will try it.

I would like to see what the Berger manual has listed. It seems to me this 140gr bullet has less bearing surface, which would be less friction, which would mean higher velocities with equal pressure. Of course those don't always go hand in hand and I'm not making any assumptions. Would still like to know what powder and velocities Berger got.

Thanks Tom. Was that from a 24 inch barrel? I thought they would have gotten a bit more velocity due to less bearing surface but it looks in line with other bullets. Did they use Varget?

Looks like I've settled on a load of 42gr varget at 2.80 OAL. I'm getting sub one inch 5 shot groups with it at 100 yards. The only 300 yd group I've shot so far was a 3 shot 2.1 inch group, so I think I'll stop experimenting.

yep & yep 2.80 Varget 41.7 @ 2792 you be dangerously over...:)

less bearing surface would yield less pressure
