working on tracking down a stock for a build on a jc higgins 50, has an FN action. will be making a custom 280 AI out of it. where can i find a decent walnut or maple stock? have heard terrible things about richards microfits, but would like something nicer than boyd's offers.
suggestions?

I've built a couple with stocks from these folks, and have been satisfied with them - as were the guys I built the rifles for. http://www.gunstocks.com/.

How much work are you willing to do? I've got a quilt maple stock that is semi-inletted for a Mauser 98 action with a 1/2" barrel channel. It's been sitting in my shop for quite awhile and if I don't sell it soon, I'm going to be tempted to put it on my Model 50 .270 one of these days soon.

Donnie was the custom shop foreman for Reinhart Fajen until they closed. He purchased some of the cnc equipment, quite a number of the patterns and moved down the street to open his own shop. He and his crew produce one of the best semi inlets I've seen.

I also have had good luck with GAG stocks. One thing to be aware of, their "semi inlets" are very semi and require quite a bit of work.
